Just to clarify to those who are wondering "who cares?" :

Fighting games NEVER have gay characters, so for gay players it's sort of a big deal. When fighters DO have gay characters, it's either incredibly obnoxious in-your-face gay or you're left to make your own assumptions, i.e Amane from Blazblue.

It's nice to have a character identify with and it's a nice acknowledgment to the gay community. The fact that it's very subtle and only a small part of his character makes it even better because, as you've stated, it "doesn't even matter" in terms of his skill set or gameplay :)

I still don't see the point. Like why does it matter unless it's central to the character's relationships or something? Cassie could be gay for all we know, but who cares? It shouldn't matter either way unless there's a point for it to be central to the character beyond an offhand remark. It just seems forced.

Perhaps it will become more "central" to the character in a later game or in the comics. Just because it is not front and center doesn't mean that it is not important...it's called character development and it makes the characters seem more real and unique instead of all of them running around just being nothing but blank slates or archetypes.

That's usual pitfall of such plots, they come out of the blue and serve no purpose but for creator to say "see, I acknowledge minorities, props (and hopefully sales) to me". However, I believe that in this case it's not really that forced. In MKX it comes up just once, gets a passing mention in kinda relevant situation IMO: it's entirely plausible that Kung Jin would suspect what is possibly rather conservative society he's offered to join to look down on him due to both his nature and his past. I say that it's a dialogue that can actually happen in such a situation, so I don't have problem with that.

Notice how Raiden already knows what he needs to know about Kung Jin, NRS haven't even made them to have some cheesy over the top "reveal scene" before - something that often happens in fiction. It would be unneeded and largely irrelevant to main plot - perfect setup for something we call "forced".

On a side note, Raiden addresses both would-be issues at once, actually: not only he tells Jin that his desires are not concern, but also says that it's what in his heart that matters. If we ignore context, it often means good intentions in addition to other things, and that's about trust at this point - something a known thief could have problems with.

Yeah, I picked up on this in the storymode. Thought it was interesting.

To those asking why it's a big deal or claim NRS is pandering to SJWs, I understand where you're coming from but by the same token, it does matter. It's not this massive huge thing, but it's nice to have a character be acknowledged as gay without there being big fanfare or making him a walking stereotype. That's the point. He's just like all the other fighters, only gay; not out of the ordinary at all. For many gay guys, it's nice to have a relatable character for once.

It doesn't even matter what they try to include. Whenever a game or movie or story in general tries to diversify its cast of characters someone is always claiming it as forced or "pandering to sjws". It's ridiculous.

As someone who has felt the same way about a lot of naysayers I can see what they mean. done poorley you can end up with a character that seems fake and made soley to prove a point, but I don't think that was case this time. When I first heard that he was a gay I was so worried we were going to end up with an akward love triangle between Takeda, Jackie, and him but that wasn't the case.

and the thing about being gay is you kind of have to let it be known pretty early otherwise preconceived notions are made and you weird people out when you break them. I gauruntee as much flack as this has gotten could you imagine if he wasnt revealed to be gay and suddenly he seemed to change in MK11? people would call it pandering x10 and many would be pissed off that they just changed their chatacter so drastically to appease someone nameless faces.

Honestly who the hell cares. Yes he's gay, good for him. I have nothing against gay people other than the fact they say "I want to be treated just the same" and then shove it in everyone's face that they're gay. I probably could've told you he was gay just by looking at him.
