Nice! I've been playing Kula and Athena since the original 2002, and Whip any time she is in the game. But I'm basically always with Kula and Athena with some version of K, King, Joe, Mary, or Shermie over the years.

A few of the new characters have me very interested though for a 3rd char. Almost all the new characters are hella exciting.
Oh God Athena and Kula are the characters my sparring partner has always mained lol. I'm tight with QisTopTier on neogaf and this'll be our first KOF together and those are who he says he rocks all the time. I played in the lab with Athena and its nuts what she can do in the corner.

In KOF 14 her BIG psycho ball has me frightened. She's gonna be a pain like Ash Crimson was with that thing. Chucks it and good luck getting past it or keeping her out. *shudders* I still hear in my sleep "psycho BALL!" repeating over and over. Kula is someone I have trouble out playing at neutral. That frost breath and her AA is so strong. You can't jump on her EVER. I essentially have to use K' when I see her for the fire puff to check her and the extra mobility. If Athena gets any scarier this game then I will definitely try to learn Mion or Shun Ei for either the double jumps or airdash options vs her.

In that second paragraph you basically described word for word exactly why I have played them for so long. Scary, almost as if I wrote it myself lol!

They are looking strong in KOF 14 too so I'm hype. There's a YouTube vid with like 10 min of Athena gameplay that I've memorized for Day 1 haha. Kula is probably my overall best character because I can maximize her neutral game. I find myself watching KOF14 vids like every day now lol.

I only hope to godly God that the netcode is good.

I think the greatest announcement this weekend from AtlasUSA was that even though it wont be in the demo the full launch release will have PS3 stick support right out the gates! Now I dont need to spend a huge chunk on either a new stick or another PCB change.

Plus they did mention that whatever they are doing with netcode is supposed to be one of the biggest upgrades the series has had. They were damned inclusive and hard working during the KOF 13 pc betas trying to get that down better in a month. Since then they've had a lot of time to learn, work and study and it sounds like they can look back at the PC results and say they are better than that with confidence. Here's hoping it turns out well. They sound super serious about trying to go all in on console gaming again now that Pachinko pooped out in Japan.

Oh man I need to find and time stamp El Rosa's Ramon vs K'.

EDIT:
Xiao Hai 1hr 58 min takes on El Rosa's ADHD Ramon lol. Its pretty fun the scramble at the end. Legit talk though...Ramon's damage is CRAZY.
Also at an 1hr 21 min in the casuals vid you see my boy Meitenkun getting played by Romance. You can see why I want him checking folks on point with that pillowfight style of his :D Also if you watch the match before it you will see Juicebox actually take down the legend Reynald!

Rock needs to come in as DLC so him and Alice can be the gruesome twosome of move jackin second gen south town fighters.

Alice + Rock. I ship it. They could hook up, talk about trying to jack the rising tackle move from Terry. Speak on what it was like peakin round corners growing up with camcorders trying to film the Bogards fighting Geese to learn how to be cool, shop for clothing with stars on em together... :)

First I'm hearing of anything in awhile about the net code. Sounds positive.

Outside of some artistic reservations, I'm looking forward to this one. There are a lot of interesting new comers, the guys getting their hands on the game are saying good things, and it sure seems like the guys in charge are working really hard to do the very best they can to make it a great game.

No joke. KOF 14 sold me on a PS4. Now I'm getting Injustice 2 half a year after that. Thats all I'll need for YEARS. 2 games, and the whole gen is worth it to me.

Has anyone talked about the balance? KoF uses a lot of legacy stuff so I imagine it's not too hard to see how it's shaping out even with 50 characters.

And what's SnK's patch cycle like?

Ahahahahaha!
hoooooboy.

This is KOF. You adapt or go home. They had a version 1, 1.1 for bug fix and infinite removal and I think glitches that allowed a meterless super or no damage trade, and version 1.2 was "climax version" from the arcade that was just more bug fixes. on KOF 13 and I'm pretty sure that was it. All you had was a little bit of DLC cast and that was the only meta changes that occurred. Folks either got good or didnt. There were a couple of changes like "can super cancel" or something, but nothing crazy. Everyone stayed good and it was generally just quality of life options more than anything like "Cutthroat Kano" sort of changes.

How was the balance in KOF 13 with so few patches? It was LITERALLY the most balanced fighter around. Even the worst in the game was still super good...they were just a bit more boring than other cast. You mainly focus on footsies and meter management in KOF. There are tons of specialists and lots of all arounders , but they have tried and for the most part succeeded over the years in trying to keep their fighters pretty balanced. They've had a few super top tier dudes show up in their history (Kagura) but for the most part they keep shenanigans in check. The last game was brilliant though. Even MR. Karate who was probably the best in the game was NOT insurmountable or even broken...just really good with meter. Only hurtle in KOF 13 was it was very execution heavy and KOF 14 is removing that barrier very very strongly.

The balance so far in KOF 14 is up for debate. We know who is stronger than they used to be and we know that generally the crazier stuff, like always, seems to be stuff that takes a LOT of resources for folks to get too so they tend to make folks who do a lot of damage highly resource based and folks who don't fairly option loaded to balance them out. If you don't get much from meter in KOF you are generally someone on point who does low to mid damage. If you do a lot of damage but somehow dont rely much off of meter you are rare and usually named Goro Daimon and play a very defensive wall game. The rest tend to be very "jack of all trades" based cast and only a few super resource heavy monsters exist.

The big thing in KOF 14 that could potentially throw it on its ear are 2 characters. Mian and Shun Ei. One has a double jump and 8 way divekicks and the other has an air dash and huge normals. These two break the mobility rules in KOF in the air and its not certain how they will evolve in the meta because this sort of movement has never been done before here. I see Shun Ei as a bigger concern than Mian because of crossups and anti projectile mobility where as Mian is very very scoutable being so floaty. Combo length and resets will determine how they affect things, but Shun Ei is a very big experiment and many will be studying him. So far...they don't do long combos at all and its balancing their mobility strength.

Ok sounds like fun. As long as no one is too crazy and if 13 turned out as good as you say.

It definitely seemed like EX characters, kim, and mr. karate were where it's at in 13. But I do remember some other characters here and there. Like chin/choi (drunk guy), clark, Elizabeth (I got to check if she's in!).

I like that the way you explained the meta makes it sound very homogenized but when I watch matches everyone seems so different. Sounds like interesting balance to me. I like that everyone has a place and no one style or set of tools really dominate.

KOF 13 actually got a significant balance patch going from Arcade -> Console. K' and Raiden were pretty much broken and both got adjusted heavily, along with rebalance to reset of cast.

Over 4 hours of KOF 14 at EVO.

Top 8 at EVO.

Geng-il got crazy mixup pressure and armor dash kicks and an OTG.

MuiMui in some kung fu looking garb using rekkas and can ex command grab for a wall splat then fireball super.

First 5 minutes and I already need to try get this game out. I already got a team of 3. But there's like 6 characters I want to try based on moves and another 4 I want to try based on looks. SnK please make a good online mode. Not just netcode wise but don't skimp on features. I need lobbies, regional searches, ping numbers, the works.

Good news everyone. The EU Antonov trailer shows MORE of his moveset! He's got T HAWK dives!

For real? I had no idea they had been using arcades. Guess thats why when KOF 13 first hit I heard folks complaining about Raiden and I was like "why? seems normal to me..."

Eh. At least they got it solid on console. I know it hardly changed after that.

Antonov is looking awesome. A perfect mix of Krauser, Rugal and Zeus from World Heroes.

The console version became the arcade update for KOF 13: Climax. Search KOF 13 arcade and watch the Raiden charge drop kick madness. ;)

50 characters and a full fleshed out story mode while the other guys charge 25 for 2 costumes, colors and a stage. It's no contest.

Andy, Ramon, King of Dinosaurs, Chang and I can't decide between Tung or Xanadu to start.

Imagine if we get colors too! I can live without a color edit mode. But a couple of different colorways for the cast would be great.

so bummed i'm going to be out of town for most of this.
Out of town for what, the initial release?

Yeah, I want to pre-order to support it and what not but I will literally be on the other side of the country for the entire month of august without a ps4. So I can't even buy a copy to bring home from there because its PAL and i'm US.

i'm just hoping i can find a collector's edition when I get back so i can get a copy of the soundtrack.
