How to keep gameplay discussions civil between top players and other forum posters.

So stuff like this has been going on since the beginning. Top players discuss strategies on the forums, other forum posters disagree--->top player gets mad. Let's hope MU/gameplay discussion are more productive when MK X gets out.

Some things I just want to say:

- We discuss strategies not resumes...

The opinion of a top player does hold more weight imo, but it doesn't make the opinion of other posters invalid by default. Discuss the matchup and don't just throw out a random MU number by saying X move beats Y move. If you're going to throw out a MU number, you're going to have to explain it(metagame) as well. You can't expect people to follow you blindly.

- Everyone is wrong every now and then...EVERYONE

Everyone can be wrong about stuff, even 10 time evo champs... Who has never been wrong? Reo won like 50 tournaments and he has been wrong about stuff...Tom brady has had over 20 years of experience with fighting games and writing guides and he is wrong every now and then. When is a MU really fleshed out? People can be right about a matchup with the knowledge available at the time, but matchups change as the game evolves. If everyone was right about the matchups from the beginning, wouldn't that mean said game has no dept???

- Strategy/MU discussions...

A matchup/strategy discussion thread actually requires you to discuss. It seems most of the people don't realise that. You don't make a claim from the start. You have to make a case for your claim. Don't be afraid to speak out, just back it up with solid arguments. Saying lol play this guy never helps either, what does your guy actually do that makes the matchup different? If you don't feel like explaining why bother posting at all? You expect people to follow you blindly?

It's just stupid that some stuff are the way they are right now. Feel free to state your opinions.

Probably the best thing to do next game is not discuss matchups at all here.

Get over here!
People also have to remember that "top player" status can change and change rapidly. Example, back in mk9 you have curbo saying something about cage and his matchups, some listen, some dismiss it as bad info because hes an online warrior and not a tournament "top player". Then MLG happens the next week, Curbo babies carl, the defending evo champion, in tournament. Now hes instantly considered a "top player" and all of the matchup stuff he was saying before (right or wrong) holds weight and is now "good information". This is just an example, the point is that you should never just discount what someone its saying because they are not a known top player. You never know when, at the very next tournament, some unknown is going to prove himself right by dismantling who is currently thought of as "the ones who know everything about the game". Keep an open mind and think about more of what is being said and less of who is saying it. Top players can be wrong and unknowns can most certainly be right sometimes.

Hope you guys can support this way of thinking...
Just so you know... players who practice against the best on a weekly basis and spend a lot of money to travel will not tolerate their opinion being held in the same light as the opinions of the Ra Helioses of the world who have never attended a single offline tournament.

Nothing will change. High level player stick in "cliques" in order to discuss and share valuable gameplay related information, which is shared on Skype, cell phones, text messages, private conversations, etc.

The "Curbo scenario" is a Cinderella story that happens very rarely in the fighting game community. The vast majority of new fighting game players who attend an offline tournament for the first time get bodied and become "enlightened".

Like I said top players' opinions do mean more, but it just doesnt make other peoples opinions invalid by default...

Top players opinions hold more weight, that sounds better than "matter more". All opinions matter to an extent, but the top player are top because they are the ones that take the strategies on the road vs the best of the best. They have more exp in what works, what doesn't, what's situational. what's a gimmick, etc...

I'm a great FG player... yes there are players who are better, but I have been pretty successful over 20 years. I know fighters... But I was 100% wrong about post patch aquaman. Why? I didn't have the exp as the guys competing every week, every night, etc... The best players are speaking from exp, not opinions formed solely on paper or only in online casuals.
