General/Other - Takeda Takeda General Discussion Thread

I haven't played a good Jax yet but that makes sense. It's seems like anyone who has a fast advancing special move with armor can make it tough for him.
Jax can frame trap u for days since our pokes are slow and my friend is training to react to kunai by sound. He armor dash punched through like 2 kunais in a row......its def gonna be one of his harder matchups

almost moderate success

This seems to be the main challenge to maining this character. He has armor but his real weakness is how slow his normals come out. So far anybody I've played that knows this just attacks with armor after they end their strings and there's not much takeda can do about it. I think that's why you see so many takedas neutral jump. I'm working on backdashing everything I can

That's it? That's all you got?
So I'm new to Takeda and I was wondering what you guys think is his best variation, or a good one to use.

Im going to be honest, im thinking this character is not that great, he has decent gimmicks but his slow normals and w/u game kinda suck lol im trying to work around this but it's definitely hard to in a game reliant on pressure

Will do, what makes you think so though?
In general, Takeda has problems defending. His normals and armor are too slow.
Shirai Ryu has those long range normals with the kunai's that don't do much damage. If you fuck up, you'll eat a lot more damage.
The only really good thing about Shirai Ryu is that you can setup a near unblockable with EX Kunai. I just feel I kinda have to rely on gimmicks to win with Shirai Ryu.

With Rhonin the reward is bigger when you open up the opponent. He has legit mix-ups that do more damage.
He has frametraps when the sword is dropped. I haven't really went into training mode with it, but I will.

The person I match up against most often is a Jax player. I can say from experience this is a particularly tough match-up for Takeda. The lack of high/low mix up options Takeda has makes him rather predictable to defend against and the stun on defending, space between normals at mid-screen, along with Jax being able to close distance quickly with his punch makes it particularly hard. if Jax has his back against the corner he is still pretty comfortable due to the Space between Takeda's attacks and if he has distance between you a non ex teleport will put you in the corner. The only success I really have in this matchup is if I constantly put on pressure with frequent and unpredictable movement which is very heavily reliant on good reads and successful strings of combos, which at my early stage of learning the game is a gamble at best lol.

Still, I am interested in hearing if any of you have developed any good strategies for dealing with this matchup? It is tough but I definitely wouldn't say it deters me, or should deter others from trying to figure out ways around it. Particularly in week one of the game lol.

Ronin is shaping up to be the most all rounded variation.

You can cancel F122+4 into Blade Drop and Plasma (which you can also use to zone along with whips) to remain safe while going for pokes with the string, decent mix up with his new overhead to low and good pressure that just takes a little but of conditioning to use and a reliable armored special shoryuken. The only glaring weakness is the lack of damage and Takeda still not being able to poke out with his normals.

Overall it's the most balanced of all his variations and should learned first alongside Shirai Ryu (for certain matchups that let you go ham).

The thing with Takeda is that his blockstrings cancelled into kunai can be armored out of. They can option select input their armor in between each hit and they'll either armor out or block the entire string (although some characters armor move won't reach you, like Cassie's backflip). I don't expect many people to do this this early in the game's life though. If you think they're going to armor out, b21 tele cancel or f122+4 tele cancel then block are safe so you can bait and punish armored moves.

How much better is Ronin than the other variants and is Ronin still easily exploitable? I like Takeda but i dont want to put time in him if all of his variants are bad.

Reading through this thread to see if I want to pick him up as an alt..

What's the general consensus? Is he too slow/whatever for high level of play? Too many weaknesses?

Takeda is a really fun character to play, but after playing him since launch he is too slow for me right now. I am still using him and hoping to finding answers to the Kung Jins, Liu Kangs, Cassies, and Jacquies, but if I am in the corner I am good as dead. I can't really armor out or poke out as he is too slow. His F12 and F21 seem too short to punish sometimes when it comes to how much pushback some other characters specials do.

I played Shirai Ryu mostly and I am hoping it will get better soon. I don't really want this character to die out and be forgotten!
