MK11 Pocket Guide: Koming Soon to the App Store
I hated the sequel bait ending and really only played it so I would unlock Shinnok
That was the best part! The post-credit scene was so badass. My other favorite part was when Scorpion speared Quan Chi.

Story was decent enough, I thought. The only thing I didn't like was the lack of closure with Shinnok. What happened after he was restored to normal? Was he dead, or what...?

Good stuff:

D'vorah- well executed character.

Jax- "I'm too old for this shit" jax is perfect.

Liu/Kung/Kitana- All of them have good plot arcs in that they're pissed at raiden and happy to be evil.

Raiden- dark raiden is basically where he must go to be even remotely interesting, but it was done well.

Scorpion- I like that they didn't completely redeem him. He's still a rage monster.

Mileena- I don't mind that she died early, or rather, I wouldn't mind if they could've filled the rest of the game with characters who were as well done. Unfortunately that wasn't the case.

Johnny- Perfect. A much better protagonist than liu ever was.

Meh stuff:

Kotal- Lots of potential. Ultimately wasted on someone who felt like a placeholder. His design is awesome, but all he does is what the plot needs of him. Nothing unique or interesting.

Sonya- "i'm grumpy and put work before my kids". that's the best reason you could come up with a divorce between johnny and sonya? Really? I know this isn't a classic novel or anything but come on.

Rain- he was surprisingly developed for someone not playable.

Team Jobber (ermac/erron/reptile)- wasted potential really, but whatever.

Bad stuff:

Tanya- She serves no purpose except to show off a dlc character.

Ferra/torr- HI I'M THE NEW BARAKA!

Kid squad- sigh.... MK does a decent job at building up these really powerful characters. Here's shao khan, he's the badass boss of goro, who's the badass no one can beat. Scary right? Here's kotal khan, the guy who replaced him. He gets his ass whooped five minutes in by some random no name earthrealm guy in front of his own people while trying to back up his execution. like...that one scene alone was just so hard to swallow because my first thought was that his entire team of cutthroat and betrayal laden council would abandon someone that weak in a heart beat. If you're trying to have a Machiavellian leadership through fear you don't get publicly destroyed by a no name and let anyone who saw it live.

Cassie beating shinnok at least makes some sense (although they never explain it), but for the rest of the game it's just awkward and the usual "mk sets up badasses and then makes them pointless" stuff.

You must have missed the final scene, as it shows a revenant Raiden throwing Shinnok's head on the floor in front of him, to show the other remaining revenants.

I think it was what it was supposed to be.

Some parts felt a bit rushed, and some characters were kinda irrelevant to the story: Erron, Ferra Torr, Liu, lao, Kitana and even Kenshi, but all in all, still the best by far, from a fighting game.

Although i gotta say that Liu and Mileena are being set up for the next game, and Erron Black apparently slowed his aging process which, if you take a hint from JC's arcade ending, could be pointing out a potential plot device to keep the series going without losing their iconic characters with time.

I hate to be that guy, but I only played story to unlock Shinnok lol. Even though it was meh, it's by far better than what other fighting games offer story wise.

In Zoning We Trust
So I wanna understand this...

It takes Raiden and the help of the elder gods to weaken and eventually defeat Shao Kahn, an emperor.

But Cassie Cage, a mere mortal, defeats Shinnok, a fallen elder god turned monster or whatever the hell that was?

Somebody explain that logic plz (inb4 fighting games no logic herp derp).
So much this. I'm willing to let a lot of stuff slide because it's a video game story, but Cassie beating Shinnok and then uber powered up Shinnok 1 on 1 was just totally unbelievable.

I didnt like the story. I get incorporating new chars but im not a big fan of "its a former heroes offpring" which they did for cassie, jacqui, kung jin(kinda) and kenshis kid....eh

Not a fan of mileena dying since shes a fav of mine. She died so early too...well we have the new evil fem fatalle (sp) in dvorah.

I like kotal alot but overall the story was just disappointing imo

I hate that bug bitch basically stole Tanya's role in the story. And I have a feeling that MIleena's arcade ending will become semi-canonical and they will claim that one of the clones was who actually died or she just shifted consciousness to another one upon dying.

"On your Knees!"
The only thing that bothered me also is that why is Scorpion (Hanzo) alive again? I mean he's a spectre, he's supposed to be dead.

I liked it. Sure, it had it's faults, but on the whole, I think they told a pretty solid story.

The Good:
Cassie Cage: I loved her even before going into the game and my affection for her only grew after playing the story. Not only is she funny and bad-ass, but she had more depth to her than I expected. In fact all the characters who got a chapter did.

The Cage/Blade Family - When I first heard that Johnny and Sonya was divorced in the current time of the story, I was a little disappointed. But after seeing how they played it out, I thought it was really touching. Sonya was the one to mess up in the relationship, which was something I wasn't expecting. In an unexpected twist, Johnny was the loving husband and father and Sonya was the one who let her career get in the way. And, as the story progressed, we saw her make steps at repairing the damage until the end where we saw them reconciled and a family reunited.

Jacqeda - Romance has been a part of MK for quite some time and it's nice to see it again in MKX. And what makes it even better, IMHO, is that they avoided the predictable. Instead of pairing Cassie with Takeda, which most had expected as they were both someway related to characters considered to be the Faces of MK, NRS chose to put Takeda and Jacqui as the Johnny and Sonya of MKX.

Scorpion No More - It was real great to see Scorpion progressed beyond just being a vengeful wraith. Hanzo Hasashi has always been a very interesting aspect of the Character and I loved getting to see that explored.

A World of Greys - Instead of having a straightforward Good vs Evil story, there was a lot more grey to this. The welfare of Outworld was what put Kotal Kahn and his group at odds with the Earthrealm heroes, not a desire to conquer or just because he was evil. Tanya was motivated by seeing a Free Edenia restored. Mileena wished to regain her throne out of a desire to bring honor to her late father.

A New Power in Netherrealm - With the death of Quan-Chi and the gruesome fate of Shinnok, Liu Kang and Kitana have assumed control of the Netherrealm. This entrigues me greatly. For the first time in a long time, both characters are being brought in very interesting directions.I can't wait to see where it takes the story.

The Bad:
Kotal's Krew - With the exception of D'Vorah and maybe Erron Black, Kotal's underlings weren't given much of a story or even a personality. They were just there to get their butts handed to them in a fight, which is a real shame. I would have liked to have seen all of them explored at least a little, or at least given some importance to the story. I mean Ferra/Torr only appeared in two scenes and that was it. They wasted an awesome concept by reducing them to simple lackeys.

Kung Jin - This one is a very subjective problem and I admit it wholeheartedly. Kung Jin is annoying AF. Sure, they give him some redeeming qualities and he comes off as likable in the end of the story, but the majority of it, he's just acting like a jerk, and not even a likable jerk like Johnny from MK9. He gets his team into trouble multiple times and is completely unapologetic about. I found myself wanting to slap upside the back of the head.

Quan deserved better. I was expecting Scorpion and Sub Zero to need to team up to take him out in an epic battle, like that was the whole point! But instead they just had a tea party because Quan crumpled like toilet paper in every fight. It hurt to watch :(
I think the reason Quan Chi was so easy to beat was because, with Shinnok captured, his powers were waning.

I'm guessing the comics will continue after the events Pre-MKX and fill in the gaps, but they were just too many things left unexplained:
  • Fujin's disappearance after Chapter 1
  • How Mileena got her new mouth
  • Jade's absence (Wasn't she also killed by Sindel? Why isn't she a revenant?) and why Kitana has taken up her weapons in her memory
I hated how Mileena was treated like a secondary villain and killed off not even half way through the story (although I'm betting that it was actually one of her clones and the real Mileena is hiding out somewhere with Reiko) after the comics and the initial story trailer hyped her up big time. I liked the development of Scorpion/Hanzo and really liked the scene between him and Sub Zero/Kuai Liang, making it seem like they've well and truly put their differences behind them and are finally on good terms (and I was hoping we'd see them team up to take down Quan Chi because that would've been beyond badass).

I loved D'Vorah, she turned out to be an awesome villain. I actually liked Cassie and co. so I have no problems with them being the new heroes of Earthrealm. I think at least Kung Lao should've been saved (he didn't even get a scene with Kung Jin?), considering that Liu Kang and Kitana are finally King and Queen together and essentially the new Deadly Alliance.

I feel like NRS should release more chapters as a continuation of the story as DLC because I don't think they should wait until MKXI to continue it when the plot could be completed/give more closure within the same Timeframe.

The story felt like a set-up for Mortal Kombat: Generations. I agree with everyone who thinks it was a huge leap backwards compaired to MK9.

The only good things that came out of it where good development for D'vorah & Kung Jin. The rest was a waste of time.

It takes some really bad writing for me to give two shits about a major villian like Quan Chi dying.

This isn't the first time NRS gave us Non-Canon Primary skins.
I wouldn't know tbh Lol. I hadn't followed the stories to closely until MK9. I just though since they were older they would be saved at some point. They tricked me! Haha

On a side note, I hope another Mileena comes along for the next MK.

i can't help but be a bit annoyed about characters like Liu Kang, Kung Lao and Kitana. They did NOTHING in the story except be dead alongside characters like Smoke, Kabal and Nightwolf. They didn't even come back to life. Yet they were given character slots anyway.

I'm not big into Rain or any thing, but I bet the Rain community is pissed off right now. He was more involved in the story than half the roster.

I guess they were a marketing/sales move.

Also never had any idea Kung Jin was gay. I just thought they were referring to him wanting materialistic things and stealing. Lol

The smart stuff!
To be honest I rushed story a bit to unlock Shinnok asap. But boy, Kuai Liang's SMILE melts all the ice!

Seriously speaking though: I hoped Smoke and Frost will be at least available to fight against. A bit surprised Lao, Liu and Kitana are still revenants. I haven't expected so many deaths, either. Brotherhood of the Shadow seams to be no more (Headless Shinnok, Quan dead), unless Bi-Han appears in another MK to clean that mess. All in all story was good. Loved the return of dark Raiden.

I agree with a lot of the "mixed" sentiment here. It's funny, when I was playing through all of these concerns were in the forefront of my brain. These kids are annoying. Why are so many characters useless zombies (without turning back ughhhh). Why give so much screen time to Rain, Fujin, Frost, Bo Rai Cho et al, knowing full well we all wanted these characters and didn't get them in the game. Is Cassie really going to just punch Shinferno to death? OK i guess.

...but by the end of it, even though it felt lackluster throughout, I felt it was still successful. D'Vorah's meddlings were sick as fuck. Most importantly, they actually got me to care about the new gen kids. Having kept up with all the NRS streams and info pre-launch, I was admittedly kinda peeved that Cassie, Jacqui, and Kung Jin looked really bland (everyone knew Takeda looked fun, etc), but by the end of the story I was totally sold on the new characters. Cassie and Jacqui are now on my "team", I had a ton of fun with Kung Jin's moveset, and the Takeda/Jacqui dynamic actually made me smile. Yeah, they had to shaft some of our old favorites, but honestly, I didn't miss Kang, Lao, or Kitana in the story. If NRS' job for the story mode was to get me to like their new roster, mission successful.

Also, gold medal to Karen Strassman for voicing Mileena, imo the best voice acting in FG history this time around. I dunno why, there was just a ton of personality and conviction in that character throughout.
