VGA AV/DVI HDMI - with audio

So here's my conundrum. I'm not much of a cable/adapter guy. I have an older 2ms Samsung VGA/DVI monitor; I've been merely using a HDMI to DVI adapter for my setup. The monitor itself does not have audio and I have not been able to figure out any means to remedy this solution with an external set of speakers. My immediate thought is that I can get this done with a VGA to DVI adapter but would this be plausible with DVI to HDMI?

I've still got my AVs for my PS3 somewhere.

So what do you have available? Can the speakers accept optical / SPDIF? If so some googling reveils some hdmi -> dvi + audio cable. I think I saw one with a standard plug jack. Actually, if you can do optical just buy an optical cable and use the optical output from the PS3 directly. This is what I was doing before I got my recorder; HDMI directly to the TV, but optical cable to my receiver.
