What's new

It would cost $6,440 to unlock all content in MK11. This is not OK.

'ello baby, did you miss me?
I'm mostly just annoyed that NRS explicitly said "there are no loot boxes" and that's all we have in the Krypt.

My point begins and ends here - I just want a fun and reasonable way to unlock the content in the game, namely Fatalities and Brutalities. I had them all after a few days in MKX and I never thought to myself "boy, I really miss running around the Krypt looking for shit." Still, that Krypt was fun to me because I could see my progression.

Anyway, I'm going into the Kast with an open mind. I hope we are both happy by the time it's over.
I mostly agree with what you say here. Although (at the risk of defending NRS again) I think when NRS said "there are absolutely no lootboxes" they meant pay-for-lootboxes -- which there aren't. You get in game gold and then you spend it on in game lootboxes. You never have the option of buying them with real cash. Whether that's a substantial difference from paid lootboxes or not, and thus misleading or not, will probably come down to the individual player. I don't personally mind it. But I also understand why you might.

Locking fatalities/brutalities is the closest MK11 comes to locking GAMEPLAY behind Towers/Krypt (as opposed to cosmetics) and I can definitely understand why that bothers you too.

TYM's #1 L taker.
I don't really understand this model for a fighting game. This stuff works for MOBA games like Dota and LoL. In theory the model should work here, keep the players playing, give em rewards, have a featured store and hope they spend some money to get what they want.

The first issue is that random loot in this game keeps me from getting what I want. The second is that MOBAs have a static gameplay loop. You know what you're getting into, and you enjoy the matches and the way things play out. You can like the MK11 gameplay and the ToT throw that fun and enjoyment out the window. All the modifiers essentially keep you at a disadvantage, without making it fun to overcome the adversity.

I'm not a lawyer, but I don't think a Loot Box would fit the legal definition of online gambling, so it's highly unlikely to be a legal issue.
I wish I could say you're right, but there's already been precedent for this thought and it's part of what scared EA into stopping what they did with Battlefront 2.

It's not the specific loot box that's the issue, but the way they're earned and opened that's the real problem. The in-game currency is earned at an arguably unfairly slow rate. This makes buying the in-game currency with real world money more of a temptation. It's the fact that you can spend real world money to play games of chance, which is gambling, and this form of gambling is accessible to all people who play the game, regardless of age or location in the USA, even places where online gambling is illegal.

Bruce Campbell 4 MK!!!
I just want skins and gear and stuff for my characters. Its all I want. I love the gameplay, I love the story, I love the roster, I love everything about this game but how this shit works. Its insane. I don't want to spend all these damn koins for shit I will NEVER use.

But like what did you guys do in old MK games and their Krypt? You grinded back then too, whats different today?
Just play matches and you get coins and use it in the krypt.
Them capitalizing on impatient people is inevitable. I dont necessarily agree with it but it does bother me that much, at least not to the extent of calculating how much it would cost to unlock everything lol
If this game was just like MKX people wouldn’t be complaining. The grind in this game is nothing like MKX. You could earn enough Koins in one arcade tower to unlock a boatload of chests in MKX krypt. You get enough Koins in MK 11 doing the same thing to maybe unlock 1 or 2 chests, and that’s not even accounting for hearts and soul fragments, not to mention at least you could focus on what you wanted in MKX, you can’t do that in MK11.

So... it's day 2.
You have the OPTION to pay or you play to unlock.
You do not have to spend another dime on the game.

The real question is, would people be MORE upset if they couldn't pay to get items?
I disagree. I paid $100 for my game, and I don't have access to the full content. It's locked behind a wall of unfairly slowly gained in-game currency which is supported by the "you can always buy more with real money" temptation. You don't HAVE to spend money but here's something you REALLY want, but you can't get it unless you play for HOURS and do some unreasonably difficult things to get one piece of gear that only changes how you look. Or, you can BUY your CHANCE to get it nice and easy!!!

My biggest complaint really is their messaging pre-launch. There was never any indication that the grind would be so tedious, that the krypt would be full of lootboxes, that even when you do want to just go ahead and buy a skin you have to hope and pray you pay attention enough to catch the one you want in the store.

All I can do now is think back to a previous comment I made a few weeks ago about how NRS isn't using shady practices since spending real money is optional and not required. I cringe at myself for being so naive haha.

I know right

MKX Krypt had one problem: The Slot Machine of the Dead. I think I've unlocked everything except some artworks and brutalities. The game pretends that you sit there and bet your koins like if you were inside a kasino. I just can't even...

In my opinion it was a very noticeable issue, this kind of things should've been removed by now.

The difference is the grind was not bad at all in MKX. You could do a tower or two (not even the crazy ones with modifiers) and earn enough currency to go to the Krypt and get a couple skins/Brutalities that you actually WANT. Have you actually played MK11 yet and tried to unlock something you WANT? Aside from the character tutorials, it's all random AND overpriced.

I spent 200K and didn't get one Fatality, Brutality or skin yesterday.

I guess yea when you look at it this way. That is quite frustrating. Hopefully their fix will resolve some of these issues

Because you're not SUPPOSED to buy the content, you're SUPPOSED to play it to unlock it. Pay-to-unlock is specifically there as an option to make NRS money off of impatient gamers. If you're an impatient gamer who can't be bothered to play the game like the rest of us, you have no sympathy from me.
It's not just impatient gamers who will get groped in by a system designed to train you to spend money, don't forget the young impressionable kids who will max out their mom's credit card or the people with mental health issues and gambling problems.

This system is not designed to be played to unlock, it's designed from the ground up to get you to spend money.

And if it's anything like Injustice 2 or even MKX, you will gain dramatically more "koins" and whatnot if you are playing single player modes and not online where the game is the most fun.

No, but it does care about promoting gambling to minors and promoting online gambling in states where it's illegal.
I actually did just mention people with gambling problems, because I think it does scratch that addictive itch. That said, it's a stretch at best to say it's gambling for minors. If I buy a game, and that game has a poker mini game for in game currency, is that game promoting gambling? Obviously not. It's just a scummy practice to have people buy in game currency for this sort of thing.

Edit: I guess FTC is looking into, although I still think the legal risk for NRS in this case is pretty low. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2018/11/28/us-consumer-watchdog-investigate-video-game-loot-boxes/?utm_term=.899c4e79f67f

There is no online gambling in MK11. There's also no promotion of gambling.

Also, (not directed at you, specifically) you don't need to unlock fatalities to use them.
Please see the link that @Marlow posted above, as there is precedent for this.

There's no precedent in the USA and you are referring to cases specifically with lootboxes. From what I understand, the only thing you can buy is time crystals which can buy you skins on the store, which doesn't resemble paying for RNG lootboxes at all.
Unfortunately, we were led to believe that the krypt was lootbox based. We were all wrong, and it has been explained. I'm more than satisfied with their answer, so there is no need to worry about lootboxes and or legal action anymore.

The only thing worth spending money on other than the game itself, is the Kombat Pack/Pass/Season Pass or whatever it’s called for MK11. All the other stuff you can get for free, afaik, from grinding
