Can someone tell me how frames work?

Like, I know startup means how quickly it comes out, active is how long the move "lasts", and recover is how long it takes to recoil before you get punished.

I don't understand the last three, or how you know your advantages. Or rather, what's considered "good" frame advantage.

Block adv = How many frames before your opponent can react, so if something has -7 block adv, it'll take you 7 frames after the attack is blocked to be able to do things, so 8 frames total if you want to block as soon as possible.

Hit Adv = Same thing but when your attack actually makes contact

Cancel = Canceling out of an animation of a special or normal and starting up a special or normal right after to combo with it.

Most pokes seem to have a startup of like 6-9 (for the quickest ones) so anything that gives you -7 on Block or higher (-6,-5,-4,-3,-2,-1,0, etc..) will be a safe poke to put out most likely.
