KevoDaMan Wins CFAS Wednesday Night Strikes! (8/19/15)

Gito666

Ninjas > Special Forces
Greetings, fellow Kombatants! With Summer Jam just around the corner, the entire Northern Virginia scene has been leveling up quite nicely, and this week was one of the most interesting weeklies we’ve had yet. Welcome to week 5 of the CFAS (Console Fighter All Stars) Mortal Kombat X League!

This edition of Wednesday Night Strikes was absolutely STACKED, with all of the usual suspects in attendance, minus a few absentees (where you at, @WITNESS ?!). After an evening of hard fought battles, KevoDaMan would ultimately reclaim his throne at the head of the NoVa scene, taking out last week’s champion, The Magician, in a nail-biter of a set. See below for results, followed by the full write-up of top 8. Enjoy!

Note: To my fellow CFAS attendees, if I listed the wrong character or variation for you, please let me know so I can fix it. With 3 setups going simultaneously, I may have missed a few things…

Results:
1. KevoDaMan (Boneshaper Shinnok, Kobu Jutsu Tanya, Royal Storm Kitana, Outlaw Erron Black, Bojutsu Kung Jin)
2. The Magician (Hollywood Cassie Cage, Kobu Jutsu Tanya)

Challonge Bracket: http://challonge.com/Mkx81915

And it begins! Top 8:
W = Winner’s Bracket match, L = Loser’s Bracket match

W: KevoDaMan (Boneshaper Shinnok) Vs. Qhaos (Assassin Kitana)
- What a way to kick off top 8, with arguably the best player at CFAS going up against former champion and master of the fan, Qhaos! Qhaos showed excellent knowledge of the matchup, blocking much of Kevo’s BS (boneshaper… not bullshit… I swear…) pressure. Match 1 was a close one, with Qhaos blending Kitana zoning and rushdown nicely. Kevo also plays Kitana, though, and knew exactly where he could begin his offense. He would win match one with a well-timed EX bone scoop, leading to a fireball Brutality for the win!
- Qhaos played a bit more patiently in match 2. There were several instances where he would bait out a bone scoop, and execute a perfect mid-air Kitana float to NJP to get a kombo going. However, Kevo is known for his patience as well, and managed to overcome Qhaos’ adjustments to take match 2 and advance.
Results: KevoDaMan 2 – Qhaos 0

W: The Magician (Kobu Jutsu Tanya) Vs. XxDark_Assassin (Kobu Jutsu Tanya, Tempest Kung Lao)
- The first (to my recollection) Kobu Jutsu Tanya mirror match to ever take place at Wednesday Night Strikes. Magician would show his expert knowledge of Tanya against Dark’s relatively new Tanya (although you couldn’t tell it was new), taking match 1 after a flurry of offense and pressure from both players.
- Dark would switch to his bread-n-butter, so to speak, in the form of Kung Lao for match 2. With two of the most mobile characters in the game involved, this was a high-paced, intense match. Both players would go back and forth, trying to pressure each other into submission, until the yellow-clad Edenian would finally put the Shaolin Monk down for the victory.
Results: The Magician 2 – XxDark_Assassin 0

L: Captain Oxygen (???) Vs. Rip (Piercing Mileena?)

- The mighty Captain Oxygen made his return to Wednesday Night Strikes this week! Apologies, but due to the fact that I was playing my match against Lith while this one was in progress, I didn’t get to take notes. Oxygen plays approximately one thousand different characters, and plays them all extremely well, so who he played during this set is anyone’s guess. Rip has shown dramatic progress over the course of just a few weeks of attendance at Wednesday Night Strikes, and plays an excellent Piercing Mileena. Sorry guys. If anybody watched this match and wants to add their own little description, message me and I’ll gladly add it here and credit you!
Results: Captain Oxygen 2 – Rip 1

L: Lith (Pumped Up Jax) Vs. Gito (Hellfire Scorpion)
- The last remaining CFAS Scorpion representative would take on the most composed, laid back player in attendance. Seriously, Lith, do you ever even break a sweat?! This is a matchup we have seen many times before at Wednesday Night Strikes, to varying results. Lith would use his signature patience to wait out Scorpion’s inevitable teleport attempts, punishing accordingly with huge kombos leading to the gotcha grab restand. This was an intense set that would come down to the very last round, where Lith would pressure Gito in the corner, but end his pressure with Jax’s downward dash punch. Gito has finally learned how to block and punish this move, and did just that to take match 3 and the set!
Results: Gito 2 – Lith 1

L: Qhaos (Assassin/Mournful Kitana) Vs. Captain Oxygen (HQT Predator, Outlaw Erron Black)
- After being knocked into Loser’s Bracket by Kevo, Qhaos looked like a man on a mission in this set. His fans would flood the screen, shutting down Predator’s slower offense to take match 1.
- Oxygen would wisely switch to his original main, an impressive Outlaw Erron Black. The Earthrealm cowboy looked much more solid against the former Edenian Princess. Oxygen nicely maneuvered around the fan onslaught that Qhaos is known for, making his way in to land some big kombos to take match 2.
- Oxygen isn’t the only one who can counterpick! Qhaos would switch to his highly effective Mournful Kitana for match 3. With her better zoning options, Qhaos would successfully keep Erron Black at bay, and take match 3 to advance!
Results: Qhaos 2 – Captain Oxygen 1

L: XxDark_Assassin (Kobu Jutsu Tanya) Vs. Gito (Hellfire Scorpion)
- In what is quickly becoming a friendly CFAS rivalry for the ages, Dark would break out his Kobu Tanya once again against Gito’s Hellfire Scorpion. Gito managed to take Dark by surprise in the first match, with a few well-timed flame auras dampening Tanya’s relentless offense. The match would end with a blocked low corkscrew kick, leading Gito to victory.
- Dark adjusted nicely in the second match, playing a bit more patiently and working his way around the flame auras. His reads were impeccable, as he would land several high-damage kombos to gain the life lead. He ended the set with not one, not two, but THREE repetitions of Tanya’s b1, d2. Who does that?! Watch those toes, Gito!
- Both players looked absolutely determined to remain in the tournament. The third match would go back and forth over and over, leading to both players having less than 10% health in round 3. An absolutely frantic scramble would ensue, with whiffed teleports, whiffed EX moves, and even whiffed normals from both players. Finally, Scorpion would interrupt one last Tanya teleport attempt with a jump 3 to end the match!
Results: Gito 2 – XxDark_Assassin 1

WINNER’S FINALS: KevoDaMan (Royal Storm Kitana, Boneshaper Shinnok, Outlaw Erron Black) Vs. The Magician (Kobu Jutsu Tanya, Hollywood Cassie Cage)
- The battle of the CFAS titans! The returning champ, KevoDaMan, would start this set with his tricky RS Kitana against the current CFAS champ, The Magician, and his Kobu Jutsu Tanya. Magician’s Tanya is so proficient that he would actually manage to make Kevo look uneasy with his own character. Magician would take round 1 with a last-ditch EX overhead cartwheel to interrupt Kevo’s attempted ‘only a true master’ comeback. Kevo would adjust, though, and take the next 2 rounds, including a situation in which he patiently fought his way out of the corner, and Magician’s Tanya pressure, to win match 1.
- Magician would switch to his homegirl Hollywood Cassie for the next match. Kevo didn’t seem phased at first, taking a dominant round 1. Magician’s Super Saiyan hair would ignite his Super Saiyan MK skills, though, and he would take two straight rounds, ending with the dreaded ding-dong vagina punch for the match 2 win!
- Kevo would again dig into his repertoire and pull out his Boneshaper Shinnok for match 3. Magician would continue building upon his momentum from the last match, expertly utilizing Cassie’s mixups to take a decisive lead. The match would end with Magician’s specialty… a standing 1 jab as an anti-air into a full kombo, in a game that supposedly has no anti-air options. Magician hits those so consistently, it truly is a wonder to behold.
- A frustrated, yet composed, Kevo would dig even deeper into his bag of tricks, and emerge with Outlaw Erron Black. Cassie would proceed to laugh at the cowboy, as she took a decisive 2 straight rounds to win the match and the set!
Results: The Magician 3 – KevoDaMan 1

L: Qhaos (Assassin Kitana) Vs. Gito (Hellfire Scorpion)
- Qhaos looked poised to make a run at his former throne once again. He showed perfect composure in this set, sitting back and throwing fans, then running in for his high-damage kombos when it counted. A flustered Gito would attempt to counter Kit’s air fans with teleports, only to eat a full kombo thanks to the fast recovery of said fans. Qhaos obviously had Gito’s number, and made things look easy as he won 2 straight matches to make his way to Loser’s Finals.
Results: Qhaos 2 – Gito 0

LOSER’S FINALS: Qhaos (Assassin Kitana) Vs. KevoDaMan (Bojutsu Kung Jin, Kobu Jutsu Tanya)
- Winners, Losers, and Grand finals just keep getting better and better at CFAS Wednesday Night Strikes, truly showcasing the excellent talent we have in the Northern Virginia area. Another close set would start with Qhaos producing enough air fans to power a zeppelin, winning a decisive round 1. Kevo would come back with his impressive Kung Jin play, eventually winning round 3 with a truly amazing d1 anti-air to dive kick kombo. 1-0 Kevo.
- Sticking with his trusty princess, Qhaos would again win round 1 in match 2. Round 2 ended in the most dramatic fashion possible. Qhaos successfully got in on Kevo towards the end of the match, landing one of his insane 53% Kitana kombos. With the match firmly in hand, Kitana walked up to Kung Jin, expecting to land a poke for the win, only to eat a wake up XRay for the loss! Round 3 was equally close, coming down to mere pixels for both players. Qhaos was in Kevo’s head, knowing that one last KJ flying kick was coming. He was able to duck two of these, before landing one final uppercut for the victory! Hands down, this was the hypest match of the night. Matches like this one are the reason we really need to start streaming… 1-1
- The gloves came off for match 3, as Kevo switched to his impeccable Kobu Jutsu Tanya. He would win round 1 decisively with that rekka pressure that we all know and love… Qhaos would adapt by utilizing more air-floats to NJPs to win round 2. Kevo himself proved to be a master of adaptation, as he would counter one of those air-floats with a perfect uppercut to take round 3 and the match. 2-1 Kevo.
- Once he gets his momentum going, it’s very difficult to stop KevoDaMan. Match 3 would see him win 2 rounds in a row using Tanya’s excellent mobility and pressure.
Results: KevoDaMan 3 – Qhaos 1

GRAND FINALS: The Magician (W) (Hollywood Cassie, Kobu Jutsu Tanya) Vs. KevoDaMan (L) (Royal Storm Kitana, Boneshaper Shinnok)
- By far one of the closest, craziest grand finals in Wednesday Night Strikes MKX history. Let’s get into it. After Magician’s Cassie won him the first round of the set with an unprecedented comeback in the corner, Kevo would play much more patiently, throwing a plethora of air fans from full screen and frustrating The Magician for the win. 1-0 Kevo
- Kevo would continue this strategy to win another round, before The Magician began to play much more aggressively. Cornering Kitana would hinder her air fan game, and allow Cassie to land those confusing mixups of hers, leading to some big kombos for the win. 1-1
- Round 1 of match 3 came down to the very end, where Kevo would expertly utilize Kitana’s EX armored Rising Fan attack to halt Cassie’s pressure. Cassie would respond with EX gunshots of her own to barely chip out Kit and win round 2. A close round 3 would end with more air fans from Kitana, enabling Kevo to go up 2-1.
- The battle of the perfectly-timed EX attacks would continue, as Magician would win the first round of match 4 with an EX vagina punch at the end of blockstring pressure. Kevo would answer back with a perfectly timed air-float to NJP to win round 2, only to suffer at the hands of EX gunshots yet again in round 3 to tie it up, 2-2.
- In what could have been the final match of the night, Kevo would switch to BS Shinnok in the hopes of keeping his tournament life alive. He would take round 1 with the bone slam unblockable. An intense round 2 would see Shinnok pressure the hell out of Cassie, leaving her at naught but a pixel. Magician would show what kind of player he is, coming all the way back to take out most of Shinnok’s life, before the fallen Elder God would land one final poke to end the match and reset the bracket!

Set 2:
- Kevo’s Shinnok would win him match 1 with excellent use of EX bone scoops to keep his distance from Cassie. 1-0 Kevo
- After 1 more victorious round of this tactic, Magician caught on, and began landing very nice NJPs on whiffed bone scoops. The second match would end with Magician anticipating yet another bone scoop, and jumping over it to land a jump in punch to kombo. 1-1
- A more focused Kevo would adjust his playstyle to win round 1 of match 3 with a near flawless victory. Magician would then adjust to Kevo’s adjustments, winning a decisive round 2 by punishing more bone scoops. Kevo would then adjust to Magician’s adjustments to his adjustments, using far fewer bone scoops, instead opting to play more patiently and punish Cassie’s flip kicks for the victory. 2-1 Kevo
- Magician would then switch to Kobu Jutsu Tanya, perhaps in hopes of playing a more pressure-based game than Cassie can achieve. He proved this by employing a furious offensive to win round 1. Kevo’s Shinnok would corner Tanya to win round 3, only to have Magician make an excellent comeback to win round 3 and tie it up at 2-2!
- This was it. After a bracket reset in the last match of the first set, the second set would again come down to the last match. Both players had their uncanny calmness in their playstyle, but one could tell that they were both dying to win. After a close round 1, Kitana would come out on top with yet another EX armored Rising Fan attack. Tanya would take round 2 with a nice corner carrying kombo. Finally, in the very last possible round of Grand Finals, Kevo would catch Magician in an attempted teleport with one last air fan to win the set and the night!
Results: Set 1 – KevoDaMan 3 – The Magician 2
Set 2 – KevoDaMan 3 – The Magician 2

Upset I had to miss it last night. Had some family business to attend to. However, I plan on making a (hopefully triumphant) return next week.

I just can't seem to get into the swing of things though and I'm not sure why. Must be nerves, or that I've foolishly adjusted my play to accommodate for online lag and delay, (or I'm just terrible :p). I just drop the ball consistently once I sit down for a set. Dropping combos, falling for mixups that I know better than to fall for, using punishable specials unnecessarily, ect.

I'm by no means an excellent, top tier player, but I'd really like to think I'm not as bad as I'm making myself look lol.

I think I may just need to try my best to get there early so I can warm up with some casual matches. Other than that, any solid advice guys?

Dude, DEF get there early and practice on those monitors. And no matter who you end up facing, just remember, they're only human, and they make mistakes. I remember you having some hype ass matches a couple weeks ago. You got potential dude, just keep practicing!

Thanks! Yeah, I'll do my best to get there earlier. Just a tricky situation since I get off at 5:30 and it takes me over an hour to get there, lol.
