Who owns the Kombos?

Long story short I know that a lot of people here make combos and combo videos--myself included. But who owns them? I mean ownership in the sense that we here in the MK community credit them?

The reason that I ask is that sometimes when I am making a combo video I think "man, I hope this hasn't been done yet. I would hate to claim someone else's find". I purposely avoid watching other combo videos for this exact reason.

The question came up when I saw dizzy do one of "my" combos (I never posted). I know this isn't a huge deal but I would still like to hear everyone's input. So what do you guys think?

There's no such thing.
Well, I have seen on this very forum and elsewhere people getting into little tiffs over it. I purposely DO NOT CARE, let me be clear DO NOT CARE if someone else claims one of "my" combos. I am more or less just wondering how everyone else feels about all of this.

Can I just use this thread to say how much I hate when people post combos and the thread title says "BY *insert the user name of the exact same dude who's posting that thread*"? This also applies for the title of videos on YouTube.

Like, dude, we get it. We know it's you. The OP has your name (and avatar!) right over it. Are you trying to help the community grow as a whole or are you just some kind of attention wh*r*?

Seriously, this stuff has been bothering me since the MK9 days.

Maybe you should watch other combo vids for exactly that reason; so you'd know whats out there and don't put in in your vid without giving credit at least to the guy who posted it.

Sue him (I hear he recently made some money...)
On a more serious note, claiming combos is just ego BS. You'll never be able to proof or disproof that someone else is using "your" combo before you found it.

I make combo vids for fun but i'm with you. All of my vids are buried somewhere in some combo thread with multiple other people. I have noticed people creating a video and making a completely separate thread to share completely crap combos ranging from like 20-30% that anyone with a brain would know intuitively.

but that's the other thing. Should I even care?

On a serious note, you could make a disclaimer in the description of your videos where you just state whether something is a practical bnb for online/offline play and what is max damage and what not and just say you don't take credit for "finding" any of the combos.

If you give the video a provocative title like "All the best Tempest Kung Lao combos by Ares_Supreme post patch" or something like that then someone will start bitching, that's just how Youtube works, there is always something wrong about something lol.

"You play weird" It's called being unorthodox ;)
I used to do that but if you avoid watching other videos to get new ideas you will slow yourself down.
And my personal opinion on "owning combos": You can claim them and all as long as they are completely yours and you're SURE there are no other videos with the same combos already posted. To claim you need proof, so who ever has the oldest video owns the combo(Which doesn't really matter anyway).
Oh, and like I already said, don't slow yourself down, watch other videos, grab some new ideas and don't forget to give credit in your video to those you took these ideas from, or even the full combo only optimized.

Hahaha. I know exactly what you are talking about. For me personally, I don't care but I didn't know if it were common for people to be attacked over combo videos etc.

You should watch all of them: if you haven't the copyright over a kombo they could sue your a**.

Credit is usually given/taken when stuff is new, but anyone wanting to argue & threaten others over this is a bit silly. That's why kombo vid makers like Tony-T usually record them asap as well as document every single kombo shown in text.

It's a slippery slope, but NRS owns the kombos :coffee:

Not to mention, when MK9 first came out I watched CHECK to get combo ideas. Most of these combos were not practical for my uses. Since MKX, I have been making my own because they feel far more natural and practical as opposed to watching other players show off their ability to milk damage. Ya know?

I think it depends on the title. When you name your vid like "Kung Lao combos" it implies that they might not have been found by you. If you call it "Kung Lao combos by Ares_Supreme" then one might interpret that you claim to have found and posted them first.

Yeah combos you come up with yourself (doesn't mean that it is original, just means that you going out how to do it on your own) tend to feel more natural since you aren't rushing to immediately get large combos, you are moving up, you are starting out simple and improving the combo bit by bit, experimenting, that is why whenever I pick up a character I start out by experimenting with strings and stuff for simple short combos and then I improve on them, then when I finally feel like I know the character I search combo videos and see if I missed anything and by that time I'm comfortable enough with the character so that I can do them.

Yup. I pretty much follow this exact same method but then I alwaaaays get a crazy Idea and cant help but try it out lol. "Hm, I wonder if there is a way to link 112 with 113 do a back flip in real life and grab a cup of coffee then end it all with a neutral jump in punch"

Whenever I open chests in Zelda games I always hope no one else claims to own the contents inside so I can keep them. I purposely avoid watching Zelda playthroughs for this reason.
