What's new

MK is a game about setups, NOT combo damage

Getting really sick of seeing all these combo videos that go in for the highest damage possible with no regards to how safe the string they're using is, the impossible situation that would require the combo to even happen and doesn't even setup a situation where you'll be in an advantage after the combo

You should really look for setups and the best way of playing your character first, combo damage is just a nice bonus.

Grundy think you handsome!
the high damaging combos show the characters capabilities in some situations, sure you most likely never will use a 3 bar combo, but if you are at a tournament and need to squeeze every last drop of damage it is beneficial to know how to do it. The setups will also come in time, the game is still very new.

It's kinda about both... Use pressure strings to get in and gain an advantage then when they least expect it, mixup into a 40% combo.

I agree with you, but usually you can swap out starters for safer strings. In the Mileena combo thread everybody is using her slow 32 frame overhead string to start combos because it does the most damage, so I just find her safest/fastest hit comfirmable strings, preferably with some range and hitting mid or low, and use those as starters. They don't do as much damage, but they are a lot more practical.

People will post all kinds of swag combos. The challenge is finding your own optimal combos, and mixing in some of the stuff you learn here on this site can help that process move a lot faster.

Savagely beating his super-ego with his id...
I support this statement 100%.

This game's meta is fleshing out looking more like a Street Fighter/UMK3 hybrid than anything like MK9 or Injustice.

It's amazing.
I have to for the most part play without combos... So I hope you are right...

Pushing your characters damage is never a bad thing, but I would like to see more tech or matchup related discussion than 20 different combo threads.

you do realize that these set ups mean nothing if someone like Kitana or Shinnok can bounce back by db3ex or zoning or building meter to use their x-rays that do insane damage on their own and nearly 43 percent if within a combo. Quan Chi, Sub, and Scorp are probably the most overplayed right now...it's very easy to know their weaknesses and them not to know what other characters can do. Also, players are not just going to stand around waiting for you to do a set up move for your combo. they will be jumping around putting you off your game. nice combos and info nonetheless...but I still don't think you've quite fully made a point. if you know a great combo or skills and you get an opening to do it then you can bounce back quickly regardless of what damage you have taken.

i'd love to see a guide that went really in depth into the basic strings, what links to what, and how to figure out your OWN combos on the fly.

if im trying to get better, it might be tricky to get someone into a corner and then in the heat of the moment, remember 58 inputs. but being able to know "ok if i hit confirm b33 i get a free Ice Blast, from there since im not in the corner i went to do this to get him in the corner where i can now B2 because it won't knock him out of reach"

I've played a lot of matches with KitanaPrime and he never used an Xray.

My Injustice main was Lobo, a character who gets 50% for one bar and he still needs setups for keeping shells loaded without being punished and keeping pressure going after a combo.

what does that have to do with what I said? this isn't Injustice and I'm not KitanaPrime nor do I see why him not using an X-ray is relevant to what I said.
