Question What makes MK9 stand out?

ArmedCalf

I guess I play Necromancer now.. PSN: ArmedCalf
We have people that I've seen play Alien along with other characters at the highest level and people that cannot use characters other than Alien at the highest level. Does it make the character braindead, no you still have to think and catch your opponent. Obviously the Alien who recognizes opportunites to hit people with 50/50's will do better than the Alien player that just does setplay bs all day long. But let's not sit here and pretend like Alien doesn't have an absurd amount of options and multiple mind games from just standing anywhere on the screen. No he isn't the reason that MK9 was better or whatever (never played it) but he's the reason why a lot of people just aren't dealing with the game at the moment

so after reading damn near every post in this thread. The fact that people are in here defending MKX is quite disgusting. I really want to like MKX and I think with some changes (not just to characters) it has potential to be a great game. but lets not for a sec act like this game isn't super fraudulent. so much over the top dumb shit. very pick up friendly. You only need to be decent at best in order to compete/gate keep. The skill gaps are blurred in MKX

For God's sake, TYM, stop pretending that Mortal Kombat 9 is everything Mortal Kombat X should have been. It isn't. And this is coming from someone who did not think highly of MKX at first when it came out over a year ago.

More I want to say, but I'll bite my tongue
Amp said it best for me below

Lol this wasn't even supposed to be an MKX bashing thread. But it became one. It's really about what's so unique about MK9.

Just to clarify as well, I actually don't have a problem with Alien nor is he the reason why I have a problem with MKX - I actually love MKX I get to mix people with unseeable shit and it's lovely.

Oh, my days !
Mortal Kombat 9 plays like a traditional 2D fighting game. Mid range control (i.e., footsies and anti-aerial attacks) is strong and prevalent. No vortexes exist, but offensive options remain powerful. The game's meta is diverse and nonlinear. Cyrax is a predominately combo character, Johnny Cage is a rush down character, Freddy is a traditional full screen zoning character, Kabal is a high execution character who is versatile, Kenshi is a mid range zoning and defensive character, Kitana is a mid range zoning and offensive character, Kung Lao is a mobile rush down character with great defense, Smoke is an anti-zoning, footsies character, Sonya is a footsies-based rush down character, etc. These aforementioned characters are all top tier characters with varied abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. A gameplay style exists for all types of players, which results in the game being enjoyable to play and watch. The superior player, even among the best of the best, always wins in Mortal Kombat 9, with no exceptions other than the game's poor balance, which leads me to discuss the negative aspects of the game.

Unfortunately, the game is profoundly unbalanced, mostly because of Kabal and to a lesser extent Cyrax and Kenshi. The game is also plagued with some peculiar glitches such as the infamous input bug and the frustrating meter drain glitch. If Mortal Kombat 9 had received one or two more patches, I sincerely believe that nobody would be playing Mortal Kombat X right now.
Thank you for answering on my part as well !
It's like you were in my head.

My point is actually that no one is carried by their character choice.

So I don't understand your post.

Besides that, I think you're being extremely biased. I hear all the time that the game had Cyrax who could kill in one hit, bad balance, player 1 advantage. Why didn't you mention those things?

I could mention a lot of good things about MKX and leave out safe 50/50s, neutral armor, some jump ins. It would sound baller, no? lol
Whats is neutral armor?

oh, I didn't know that 'numerous' meant 2

one after the jump kick, the second after the pizza where he also didn't have the resources to kill from that situation

every other time he got hit because he was trying to followup with the pressure or blocking low so not exactly baits

Those two unpunished flips made a difference.

Kotal's f1 starts in 11f. It punishes ex flip meterlessly. So after any blocked mb flip, he could go into a full combo into another totem set up. So yeah, he failed to punish and left damage on the table. I'm not a Kotal main but I'm punishing it for 25% using f1,b2. Two f1,b2 punishes is 50% damage he missed out on. He fucked up.

I said that he failed to bait armor, thank you for proving my point. Had he tried to bait it more, we may have a different EVO Champion.

You don't have to take it as shitting on one game if you point out things you like in the other. But a lot of guys seem to be comparing bugs (MK9) to decisions in fighting mechanics (MKX).

Input bug, Cyrax resets, etc. These are more along the lines of bugs or glitches. Things that weren't meant to be part of the fighting mechanics but stayed possibly due to lack of support. Theoretically these aspects could've been removed. And then what do you point to? (you have choices)

Run button isn't a bug, it's intended. Same with far-reaching normals that launch or jail into pressure and are safe. That's why people complain about "footsies."

Unreactable highs/lows aren't a bug. Those highs/lows being combinations of safe/armored/launching moves exacerbate the 50/50's. That's why people complain about guessing.

Then there's aspects like the insane and varying block-stun. Or varying launch heights. Armored launchers everywhere. Obviously the underwhelming anti-airs.

Those things aren't bugs, they're gameplay decisions. That's the way I take the discussion. Comparing the gameplay decisions.

So it doesn't matter that the people who made MK9 literally didn't know how to make a fighting game at the time. All that matters is that you don't like the direction of the much cleaner MKX?

No trades is horrible and a complete joke in a competitive fighter. Someone not liking the run button or some 50/50s in the form of overheads and lows is whatever. It's a different game.

Also, newsflash, every game will have different "footsies". Just because your nostalgic omg fighter is MK9, doesn't mean that no trades and one move anti airing, is real footsies. Just because your game had better zoning, doesn't mean that that's the way it should be. Games should be different, without being badly designed. Both games have problems.

And the word footsies is for soap bars. Neutral, spacing. These are grown men words.

I hatelove this game
Mk9 had a neural centric play style and characters typically only had a low or overhead that led to a combo, but not both and one was unsafe. Character game plans had a hard counter that they had to overcome. You typically had to rely of whiff punishes and stagger pressure to open up your opponent. The poke counter poke meta was one of my favorite infra asked of the game.

Even though Nightwolf was bottom 3 in mk9 I loved his style. Nightwolf had high shoulder that can be neutral ducked for full combo and no 50/50...but I could bait you into neutral ducking and try to catch you with b2 or lightning. If I baited you then I outplayed you, if I hit you with shoulder its your fault cause it's so easy to counter.

If Mk9 top tiers were in MKX...I strongly feel that cyrax and Kabul would only be upper mid tier. Kenshi might be slightly higher but not much.

That tells me all I need to know about MKX top tiers and the game as a whole

And that is exactly the reason this thread keeps escalating quickly, two group of people talking about different reasons, it doesn't even match and can't even be compared, there for its plain terrible.

how are people supposed to take your word for it? you didn't played MK9. Whatever you say about it will keep losing credibility because, guess what...

You didn't play it.
