SFV might be different. It probably won't, but I was just taking a stab at NRS because I'm sure Capcom will do a much better job with a grappler character than them.
If MKX is any indication, the best we can ever hope for is a KoF style strike grappler. NRS is too fond of the tiny tekken grab animations that chuck characters all the way across the screen with half a frame of advantage to build a real traditional grappler.

Birdie is pretty fucking slow. He just has a lot of good punishes and a come at me bro v skill.

Is he? He seemed slow but the regular slow. Just slow in comparison to everyone else. I'll look at some footage again but at that E3 tournament he seemed to be way more active than I've seen Zangief or T.Hawk. Guess those 2 things really add up.

His movement is not good, but his normals and hop grab have killer range and I think if he eats he can get armor on his headbutts. Still, he's got nothing on the actual fast characters like Chun and Cammy and Charlie. I think all said and done Bison is the actual slowest character right now in terms of raw foot speed.

What command grab can you low profile in SF?
There are some ultras in sf4 that you can escape by playing with your hitbox, but generally you can't low profile SF grabs because Capcom puts their grab collision boxes all the way to the ground and usually a couple inches out in front of the character. That's why capcom grapplers can "grab" extending limbs without a trade.

NRS prefers (or is unable to do without) "realistic" hitboxes that don't actually extend beyond the striking body / limb. At least since Injustice they've been capable of doing non-model based collision (Doomsday's old splash prime example) but just about all the "breathing hitbox lol" issues in MKX are because NRS is super stingy with their hit / hurtboxes.

If MKX's grab boxes went all the way to the floor and stuck out in front of their hands, we would have a whole different ballgame.

Not a lot of ultras that are just one big grab, but the ones that are a couple hits into a grab (Guy, Chun, Cody, etc) had (its mostly been fixed in ultra) way to escape the grab with a quirky box.

Most NRS grabs get beat by mashing because they have tons of start up. It takes Zangief 2 frames from the time you hit punch to be grabbing you. Meanwhile, most MKX grabs need 10 frames or more to hit. That's ten unarmored frames with tiny range and only the ability to grab things at chest level. Of course you're never going to land it outside a punish. If NRS games had capcom grabs any string that had a gap larger than -3 would be grabbable, mashable or not.


Thinking about it though, I now believe the reason MKX grab boxes are so shitty is because you can use them in juggles. If the box reached to the floor or they came out lightning fast, you could tack them onto just about any stray launch. Which I personally think would be better, but obviously they do not.

Seems someone has never played MK Deception. 60% juggle throws that won against hits most of the time, could be guaranteed, led to otgs and various infinites. See, NRS can do grapplers !

SF characters have always been uh "exaggerated" not to mention a tiny bit racist. Complaining at this point is kind of redundant.
Its just a bunch of pixels at the end of the day.

That being said I think this character looks hella stupid lol.

Snappin' spines all day e'ry day.
The double ass slam Ultra Combo is what really just makes it too much. There are so many classic tag team finishers they could have used instead.

God this game feels and looks very rushed. I wish they took an extra year to polish everything but Sonny needs that quick cash grabs I guess.
