Even in MK9, Jax was not a very big midscreen BnB character. Most of the damage was piecemeal accumulation, until he got you into the corner, where the real fun begins.
MKX looks like it's no exception to the deal -- so if you can't do the tighter links, don't expect to get a huge chunk from one combo midscreen; focus on adding up the damage via dash punch reads, his high-low tools and footsie tools comboed into Gotcha or dash punch, etc.

You don't use midscreen combos that much with Jax honestly and regardless of this he is a MONSTER in this game with gotcha grab pressure. He's not about the combos, he's about the pressure.
