Up until now we were unclear on the exact rules for Major League Gaming, Winter Championships that will be taking place next weekend on March 23-25. Rules for all fighting games, Mortal Kombat 9, King of Fighters and Soul Calibur are now up and you can find them below. Note that these rules are much longer than the "tournament standard" that we have set in the FGC, so be sure to read them closely especially of course if you're competing at MLG Winter Championships! Thanks to @Medina4life for posting these.

Go here to view the rules on MLG. NOTE: The MK9 rules may vary greatly from the other fighters.

Why do tournament rules never include what the bracket rules are? (double elimination, which matches are 2 of 3 vs 3 of 5) Or if that horrible rule Medina mentioned the other day is in effect.

This is important @STORMS , the "continuation" rule I mentioned in a forum post earlier WILL be a part of the general rules. It's a messed up, dumb rule that I fear will cause some backlash. Here it is one more time if you haven't heard about it already...

Every match you play in the tournament has more value than they way standard rules in a double elimination bracket are. Basically, say PL and REO meet each other in the winners bracket. REO sends PL to losers bracket 3 - 2. PL fights has way up the bracket and they end up facing each other in Grand Finals or even say losers top 8 or something. Because Reo beat PL earlier in the tourney, the continuation rule makes the previous set they played earlier in the tournament count. What this means is the match is no longer best of 5 but extend the series to become a best of 11 with a 3-2 advantage for Reo

From what I understand, for Reo to win he only need to win 3 matches to advance
while PL would need to win 4. It makes the process all the more complicated and harder to follow along if you haven't watched every single match. My biggest concern is the commentators not fully understanding the continuation rule, or them having difficulty explaining to the viewers. I myself am having a tough time understanding this.

This is big news for anybody preferring the DualShock3 for it's more sensitive D-pad. I read that correctly, right? DS3 allowed? I am kind of surprised, to be honest.

    Great stuff.

Yeah, I don't think anyone on stream wants to see a potential first to six wins match clogging up the tournament progress.

guess we'll be seeing how much people like that rule.

I do not think the rule is really that messed up. If anything it is more fair, especially when there is this much money on the line. Imagine a situation like Pig vs Reo at FR... Pig's very first win with Millena did not count because Reo later reset it. It could even create some more hype scenarios.

All in all it plays very similar to other tournament rules, but rather places an emphasis on the rounds you play, which IMO is kind of cool. It is different but pretty easy to embrace, especially with how generous MLG has been to MK9. Trust me, I doubt the results of this tournament will differ if the rules were different. It still favors persons who play the best will make it to the top.
The scary part is the random seeding...

As a general rule, we should show MLG as much respect as possible.

no rules about fatalities, babalities? :)

also, I don't see what the big deal is about the continuation rule. Yea, it makes it harder for the loser if they come across someone who's beaten them, but it is what it is.

The reason that brackets are run that way in the FGC is because it makes sense. REO still had win more games than PIG to win the tournament. Starcraft players hate this rule too. It's a big criticism of MLG, just because we disagree with some of their rules doesn't mean we're not respectful.

    more info:

    Mortal Kombat – Competition Format

2012 Winter Championship - Mortal Kombat Event Format
    Bracket Format & Seeding
    1. The Event will support as many as 128 Players in an Open Bracket.
    2. The Open Bracket will be separated into a Winners Bracket and a Losers Bracket. After losing a Match in the Winners Bracket, Players will enter the Losers Bracket. A Match loss in the Losers Bracket will result in elimination from the Event.

    3. Players will be seeded randomly.

    Match Format
    1. All Games will be Best of 3 Rounds.
    2. All Matches will be Best of 5 Games unless the Players have already played each other in the Event.
    3. If Players are scheduled to play each other for a 2nd time, their Match will expand to a Best of 11, include the previous Match, and pick up where that Match left off. For example, if Player A beat Player B 3 Games to 0 in the Winners Bracket, the Best of 11 will resume with Game 4 and Player A leading 3 Games to 0. The winner of a Finals Best of 11 Games Match will win the Event.
    4. If the Players scheduled to play each other in the Finals have not yet played against each other, an initial Best of 5 Games Match must be played. If the Player that came from the Winners Bracket wins the initial Match, they will win the Event. If the Player that came from the Losers Bracket wins the initial Match, the Match will expand to a Best of 11, include the initial Match, and pick up where that Match left off. For example, if the Losers Bracket Player beat the Winners Bracket Player 3 Games to 0 in the initial Match, the Best of 11 will resume with Game 4 and the Losers Bracket Player leading 3 Games to 0

    That is the continuation rule
  11. Medina4life
Also, for the continuation rule, the winning person must use the same character that they used in the previous game. It just all becomes kind of weird. It's just kind of messed up that you expand the series to a best of 11 is kind of odd. If you get 0-3 in a winners set against some one, if you face that same person again in the losers bracket you have to win 6 matches while your opponent only has to win 3 to advance. Do you really want to see a losers match that isn't in top 8 that have the possibility of more matches being played than a typical Grand Finals?

these rules make sense to me because i have played in an mlg event in 09 for halo 3, it happened to my team when we lost to a team early in the bracket only to play them in losers round 7 and had to win more games because we lost to them earlier, imo its 50/50 i understand why its there but i still blame my teams loss on it because we won the first two matches but then lost the next 3 :'(

lol way to ignore the elephant in the room

EDIT: #3 of the event format, not the match format

As a Starcraft player I have to concur with @Medina4life ... you all are going to HATE extended series (proper name for the rule) once it starts happening at MLG. This is one of the angriest communities I've ever been a part of, I'm extremely surprised that nobody besides medina seems to care about this rule.

Also, no kombat kodes wtf? We can't use no blood or disable foreground elements? That's so stupid...

Yea that's messed up to.I wonder if I have any seed points? I won mortal kombat GB ladder way back in the first season LOL, I think I'm probably one of the few people here who have GB experience... Good ol' FPS days lol
  19. Medina4life
FPS and FGC are two different communities.. In FPS it kinda makes sense because you play different game modes. Here it kind of makes matches drag longer than they should.
  20. Karried
Well regarding winning the extra set of games for the person who lost, is still kind of the same with Double Elim standard.

If the Loser faced of against the Winner in the Double Elim, the Loser had to reset and play a extra set of games anyway in Grand Finals, while the Winner had to Win one set.

So technically everyone in Losers has to play it likes it's a GF match.

I think this just streamlines it more, it's essentially the same thing, no?
  21. Juggs
What's the point in getting upset over a rule we can't change? Might as well accept it and just be prepared for it.

@Sabin said on twitter he was going to do seeding sometime soon. I'm guessing players will be seperated into seeding tiers (high, mid, low) and it will be randomized then. Who knows though.

Completely random would be weird and could lead to a totally imbalanced bracket and messed up top 8 if all top players are on one side of it. It shouldn't be handcrafted brackets though, there should be some randomization of course, there just needs to be some form of seeding.

@OJuggernautO I see where you're coming from and I agree with you to an extent. It is the way it is and if the starcraft community couldn't change it, we're not going to either. It's really not our place either, we should be thankful that we're even there to begin with :D

I still think the rule is kind of asinine though. Oh well, not like I'm gonna make it far enough in MLG for it to really matter LOL
