First off, let me start by saying if you're a die-hard Killer Instinct fan and you want a new Killer Instinct game... this will only tease you more than you can probably handle. This is a "fan-made" 3D Demo Reel video by Ryan Markley that features a "rebooted" version of Orchid. She is shown three times in this video at 0:08, 0:31 and 1:41 and Wow, does she look amazing. Note that the T-Rex shown after the glimpse of Orchid is NOT supposed to be Riptor from Killer Instinct. View video notes below:
Shot03, Orchid close up: All aspects. A reboot of a character from the video game "Killer Instinct". Base mesh and morph targets/blend shapes modeled in Maya, sculpting and texturing done in ZBrush. Rigged in Maya using AdvancedSkeleton. Hair created with Maya hair. Shaded, lit and passes rendered through mental ray for Maya, compositing in NukeX.

Shot 06, quick cut Orchid turnaround: All aspects.

Shot 24/25, Orchid turnaround: All aspects.

A full demo reel of the cast... I would need a few days off to handle the awesomeness... @ryanmarkley3D :D

I don't think I'm young enough to handle that much awesomness :D

I watched the video a couple of times, but never wrote anything. I guess I remained speechless :)

A big online debate that has spanned over an entire decade. From her KI2 shots, it seemed that she was not but certainly had some ethnicity. I've always imagined her as slightly middle-eastern or hispanic given her bodily proportions but if you go according to game lore, she is tibetan as her brother Jago is defined as that by Rare. Hope that helps :) and yes I have no life and way too much time on my hands.

    Hey Ryan,

I randomly came across this whilst performing my usual hunt for any new Killer Instinct Orchid initiatives on the net. Hell, these days I feel like a depressed Jodie Foster from Contact (you know, constantly searching out there with hope) and boy do I feel like her today - except its like the bit when she actually discovers life out there!

Anyway, as one of her biggest fans, I wanna say thanks for creating her, the costume looks really tech based (almost matrix-esque) and I'd love to know what was your inspiration for it. Also her face looks sexy as hell - the hair the lips etc. really nice and I know from my friend how hard hair, eyes and faces are to get right.

Good luck with any future projects.

Thanks everyone for watching, it really is thrilling to see that people like the stuff I make! @punchbags: Thanks! My inspiration was really twofold. First, I wanted to create a female model to show form on my demo reel. And of course, I'm a huge MK and KI fan, so it was just a matter of picking who I wanted. MK was already being rebooted, and I didn't want to do something that was already being done. Orchid was the obvious choice to me just because she was one of the iconic characters in a comatose franchise. I thought the idea of re-imagining her for today would be challenging and allow me a lot of latitude to do what I wanted. My inspiration for the costume was a little bit Mass Effect (probably the matrix/futuristic influence), and a little bit doing research on the internet. I knew I wanted to get away from the lime green body suit because I thought it looked somewhat dated, so I went with a corset because it would keep everything in place, but still be flexible. I was going to do a skirt but doing the stuff Orchid would do in a fight with a skirt would probably not work out so well. Plus cloth is a pain to simulate. I added the hair last minute, and it's probably the part of the model I'm most proud of. Hair is a truly a beast, but at this point I've got her all rigged for animation. Thanks again everyone who watched :D .
