Ah... the memories.

Days of spending quarters at the arcade. Riding your bike to different towns to try and find some arcade, laundromat, deli, or diner with the newest fighting game in it.

I remember when Fatal Fury came out and places on Long Island claimed to be getting "Street Fighter 3". I must have ridden my bike for HOURS to different arcades looking for it.

Anyway... If you're an old school fighting game player like me then you have some war stories, favorite old school fighting games to play, so on and so forth.

By the way... if your fighting game was not released as a MAINSTREAM arcade game... it's NOT Old School.

My favorites from my in no particular order:
1. UMK3
2. MK2
3. SF2 CE and Hyper Fighting
4. Super Turbo
5. SFA2 and SFA3
6. Virtua Fighter 2 and VF3
7. Killer Instinct
8. SF3 Series, particularly 3s
9. Virtual On

Arcades and places with Arcade cabs I played in:

2. Chuck-E-Cheese in Levittown (played in my first MK2 tournament here)

Good topic. I'm 30 so I was around the perfect age when arcade fighters were huge in the 90's. I remember every single saturday throughout middle school it was my weekly treat to get 10 bucks and get dropped off at the mall arcade for the day. They had a deal where if you bought 5 bucks in tokens u got 5 free so I had essentially 20 bucks to play with. Also let me not forget the local gas station a block from my house which had 3 hot fighting games in the back at any time. Me and my neighborhood friends would go there after school and play SF2 and MK2 for HOURS. The "no throw" rule was in effect and I saw plenty of arguments stem from this. Other good places were movie theaters and roller skating arenas, whenever I went to either the games were more of a draw than skating or movies. I was in arcades regularly from 91-98 when sadly they started closing them down locally.

Edit: Ah I forgot to mention the deal where u used to put your quarters on the side of the screen for next game. TONS of fights and shit started from ppl either trying to steal them or saying they were theirs and cutting in line.

Fave arcade games:
All the MK's
KI
SF2
Virtua Fighter
Samurai Shodown
Primal Rage
Raiden
T-Mek
Mace: The Dark Age
T2 Arcade Game

Fave arcades:
1. Jolly Time Arcade in Eastland Mall
2. Funhouse (still in business today!)
3. Celebration Station (2 Floor arcade with all fighters on 2nd level)

Man, I remember the "no throw" rule... LOL... it existed here in NY as well.

jamessmk knows ALL ABOUT IT... LOL.
Oh the days! It was prevalent here in tx as well. That shit would start fights man. At our local tilt.arcade, there was an arbitrary rule for mk3/umk3 that if you threw, you forfeited and got kicked to the back of the line. Shit was serous business.

LOL... yeah... here it just started fistfights. Or... got you mercilessly called "cheap"... so funny how much times change. Now, have fun matches with people where all we try to do are set up throws and if you hit your opponent with anything that doesn't lead to a throw(or a throw attempt), you "give it back"... LOL

I'll give a short list.

EDIT - Let it be known that everywhere i went to play that everyone did no throws. It was an unwritten rule in NJ. Reading this thread now i see it being talked about, so figured i should edit my post and make a mention of that. I thought EVERYONE played no throws, not just NJ, till i found out after meeting Shock that wasn't the case.

1) SportsWorld - Paramus, NJ

This was during the MK4 days. Basically, Sportsworld had a coupon in the Saturday newspapers that were "Buy 5 dollars worth of tokens, get 5 dollars worth free". So i would buy one roll, and sell the other lol. I would end up making 60-100 dollars selling tokens and just playing MK4 there (no comp unfortunately). Till one day, i got kicked out of Sportsworld for selling those tokens lol. Still, was funny as hell. Playing MK4 and selling tokens. Damn the person who ratted me out :( Made a good living there as a 14-15 year old kid :D

2) Big Mouth - Guttenberg, NJ

Destroyed all comp there. Was a guy who's tag was ACE in KI2. He taught me how to play, KI2, no joke. He is the one who showed me the TJ Combo breaker infinite which i swore to never show anyone. Eventually beat him till he stopped coming around. Played KI2 and UMK there. Big Mouth ended up getting closed down due to a gun shooting there.

3) Fun and Games - Wayne, NJ - Willowbrook Mall - By far the best competition i ever played in NJ

First time i went there was for the MK4 Road Tour. I waited in line 3 hours to play 2 games, which i ended up losing. And it was vs this real big fat chick who didn't know how to play the game. Was a very sad day for me :( Played MK4, Rival Schools and a few other games there. I would always go on Saturday nights, and the crime was very bad there. There were always cops there. It was a rough area to be playing as.

4) TimeOut Arcade - Freehold, NJ - Freehold Raceway Mall - My home and most active Arcade i was at.

For those that don't know, i grew up in Marlboro, NJ my whole life, till about 16 years old when i moved up to Bergen County.

I went to TimeOut for many years, mainly became active there when MK3 dropped. I would always play my rival there, Eric. Eventually, me and him started to play together at arcades and would switch rounds on people. These were great times. I was always so nervous to talk to Eric, but he was the only person who knew the Human Smoke code, and one day i couldn't resist anymore and had to ask him how it was done, and from then on we became good friends.

He is responsible for me being here, and it is widely speculated that it is the same Eric responsible for Shock being here as well. I played MK4 there and dominated all, including Eric. That is about the time the scene died. I would go to this arcade at 9 in the morning and hang out there everyday till 6 or 7. I would just wait and wait till comp would show up, usually every 2 or 3 hours. Most of the time Eric didn't show...

My good friend to this day, Jason Kucine (known as IndridCold in the MK community) went to TimeOut with me and used to watch me play MK4. He still tells me that he has never saw such determination before in his life. We went to high school together and refound each other later on in life because of yup, you guessed it, MK forums! (MKOnline.com) Jay came with me to CEO2011 (for those of you that were there).

5) Strathmore Bowling Alley - Aberdeen, NJ - This was the closest place to Marlboro, NJ.

I went to Strathmore on Wednesdays usually to play UMK, this was another bad crowd to be around, especially at my age. It was hard to really play my game there because i was usually scared for my life. Dominated pretty well there, and went there often for challenges in school. I also liked the sticks there and they did a good job replacing them when needed.

6) GrandSlam Batting Cages - Marlboro NJ - The birth of the MK arcade.

GrandSlam was the first place i went to that had a MK1 or MK2 machine, and the lines were huge. Usually 50 people. I may have gotten up to the machine once or twice. But the hype surrounding this place was amazing. Very similar to how it was at TimeOut.

7) East Brunswick Mall - Didn't go very often.

I'm sure i saw James there smoking cigz once or twice lol. I would always see ashtrays on top of the sticks. Was a real hardcore place to play but just wasn't for me since i hardly went. It felt like a crowd of people that you had to be a regular there to really fit in. Hardly met any comp there either. Played UMK.

8) Seaside Heights - Boardwalk - Seaside, NJ

Ah the good ol days of going to the boardwalk during the summer. The arcades there were huge and always had some serious comp there (not too serious). The sticks there usually sucked. But i spent most of my days playing Robot Smoke in MK3 vs people there. Had a lot of good memories there, and by far the most competition of all the places i mentioned.

9) Kids Kingdom - Edgewater NJ

I always went there on the weekends or Spring Break, but after i moved from Marlboro, this became the only spot to hang out at because there was a poolhall there (21 Billiards). The place was always packed with Korean and Japanese people, which usually meant the competition was pretty high there. For the most part, i got beat in MvC2 and Tekken Tag, but dominated UMK and did well in Tekken 3. I used to get free tokens there, and THIS is the place that had Virtua Tennis, which is where i used to play people for money and became a VT player!

10) Point Pleasant - Boardwalk, Point Pleasant NJ

Didn't go there much, and the machines (and everything) were pretty dirty. No comp there either. But still played to support the game.

there's plenty of others to mention, but this is all that comes to mind for now.

Yeah it got physical quite often. And oh man, the days of vf arcade....god help you if you won by ring out..

I really do miss those days smh

Too many games and too many good stories to share

I reminisced with JamesMK at NEC about the no throw rule lol, the no throw rule was serious in Philly as well, lots of fights over that lol

Waaaaaait. Refresh my memory. Is that the one out by Yonkers, a few miles from the Cross County Mall?
I live in Yonkers and I'm sad to say that they decided to downsize that very same Nathans and will be reopening as a much smaller fast food place in the near future.

I WILL EAT THIS GAME
No, that is on Long Island. Close to Roosevelt Field, actually.
Ahhhh, mmkay. I know next to nothing of the island of long.

Whaaaaaat? :(.
That used to be my dojo, maaan...whenever Poppa Box took me on a comic book hunt, if we went to Yonkers, we didn't leave without going to Nathan's. Crypt Keeper and MvC2, all day untl the quarters ran dry. Such joyous times...

LOL Phil, know one has more war stories than me, but mine were with JamesMK and his group.

he is a no throw rule story..

took place at spaceplex, I would smack around people in Finks group at that time in UMK3, so they decided to bring ALDAGOD down from NJ to play me. Spanked him the first 4 games, than he wouldn't disable throws, starting throwing me, and i walked off the game. I guess he got frustrated losing 4 in a row.

ask fink about the time he kicked a dent in the mk4 cab at westbury nathans.

I think you know most of my war stories, since we shared a great deal of them.. riding our fat asses into East Ghetto to play MKII right upon release at that 24 hour deli, affectionately referred to by us as "Two-Four".... L&S Comics!!!!!

No throw rules are fucking retarded. If you weren't meant to throw, it'd be a wrestling game. Granted, people abused it.. but it always irritated me when people would cry about it but be abusive with the quicksweeps w/ Reptile in MKII/UMK3. Silly business, I say!

My first experience with a arcade cabinet was with MKII at a local Wal-Mart lol. Every time we went there I'd beg my parents for some change to play while they shopped. One memory that sticks out was when I played some guy that was probably around 20 and he got so upset that I beat him he started cursing at me. I naturally freaked out because I was rather young. My step dad walked around the corner right when this guy was gearing up to get physical and put him in his place lol.

Are any of you guys familiar with Mr. Gattis? I use to love going there to play X-Men and TMNT. They had a large arcade back in the early 90's.
