None of those ever broke the fiction...?

So you're telling me Dhalsim in his entirety is not as much of a joke character as R. Mika...? And that all of this shit these characters do is anywhere close to believable...?

You really aren't making any sense whatsoever.
That is exactly what I'm telling you. Dhalsim is a master of the soft arts, which can be absolutely frightening to go up against. R. Mika is a female wrestler dressed like a clown-stripper.

How does it not make sense?

How the hell does Dhalsim make sense as a believable fighter? He stretches his limbs to a comical extent and literally brews fire from his belly.

I just find it really strange that you tried to justify Dhalsim. Unless your are legitimately trolling me. It's one thing for you to simply not like goofy characters because they aren't believable. But then you get presented with plenty of examples that fit that level of goofiness and unbelievable nature, and they suddenly aren't?

Get staffed bro
You said kung fu is less applicable than boxing, wrestling, and MMA in real life altercations. I know that to be 100% false, so your awareness is lacking.
That's your opinion and open to debate. It doesn't simply become fact on your say so. It might be false in your experience, but I know many people that will say the complete opposite. It would also depend entirely on the kung fu, it's instructor and its application. I'm a huge advocate of wing chun, but there are so few decent instructors around that it's easy to find someone that will teach you nothing but SNT for over a year before you even get a sniff at something practical.

My point is that if you take Jo Average off the street with the aim of them being better equipped to defend themselves within a short period of time, traditional arts are not the way to do it.

This is hugely off topic anyway so will move on.

This mean you don't like me?
This discussion shows the increasing need for a new fighting game. Fuck Rising Thunder, we need a more realistic, grounded experience that channels reality like none other. Forget Street Fighter, we need Pavement Quarreler!

The most realistic, politically correct fighting game ever conceived! The only thing you'll be offending is your opponents face!

With such characters as:
MOSBA!
(Morbidly obese sports bar attendee!) With projectiles that can only be thrown if they are present on the ground in the stage, as he cannot just magically pull them out from no where!

Tipsy Jimmy! An inebriated middle aged man who, while not a professional fighter, is belligerent enough to to make a street fight plausible!

Saito! A sexually frustrated martial arts instructor who has seen a steady decline in his practice due to lack of sign ups on account of the city's ailing economy, and vents by way of assault and battery!

Man-O-War! A trigger happy 'war veteran' who was dishonorably discharged from the military, but hides this fact and throws his weight around by attacking younger men who appear accomplished in their lives, as he is jealous of them!

No women on the roster! Because Pavement Quarreler is ultra realistic, no women are playable because that is not realistic unless in the MMA.

1on1 fights? Fuck that noise! In real life people don't just stand around and watch all the time

Fatalities and hospitalization! If a character sustains lethal injuries or dies: You cannot play them again. If a character sustains a move that would limit their use of limbs IRL, you can bet your sweet ass their limbs will be limited in-game as well!

But wait! There's more!

Super Street Pavement Quarreler 4!

Complete with playable, unhappy Starbucks baristas who, while they have no problems with Christmas, hate the issues related to the design of their cups!

Kick ass, take names, and learn match ups, but only if your opponent consents to you observing his habits and learning from them.

Thank you for spicing up my lunch break. I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard at my desk. My coworkers literally came over to ask what was so funny.

The ones you presented aren't jokes.

Mika is a joke.

I once again totally disagree. Its the way to go, but you need to find the right teacher. It isn't about style, but about finding the real thing. There are many poseurs out there and very few good instructors.

Wing Chun techniques are great, but I have never seen it taught where it could stand on its own. It dictates you control the center-line, but the head movement is only on approach. If your head isn't moving, how can you see the center-line punches coming? If you can find the real deal, then go with it. Just know you're best served by supplementing it elsewhere.

Shaolin Kung Fu can stand completely by itself.

Punching bag that throws fans !
So, to sum up, any fighter that isn't dressed "seriously" is not a "believable" fighter ?

A lot of luchadores from Mexico are dressed way worse than Mika is, yet they can definitely kick your ass, believe it mate :)

Mika's attire doesn't make her fighting style any less "believable" than Gief.

She has a cheerful personality, and ... that's about it ?

I know it's hard to realize fighters can be happy about ... fighting ... when you play MK all the time, but it happens sometimes :)

And it certainly is way more "believable" than Dhalsim being able to teleport and spit fire while bitch slapping you "from downtown" lol

EntropicByDesign

It's all so very confusing.
So... again.. Anyone have a beta that has the newer characters unlocked and working? (Laura on up). Mine doesn't seem to work at all any more, and I didn't have the anyone after Rashid. PM me if you dont want to post here directly. I cant seem to find one that works any more. =[

I'm sorry for how I came off in this thread.

It hit a nerve when people said kung fu was inferior when I know different, but how is anyone to know that?

There are very few outlets for real kung fu instruction outside of China and a whole lot of pretenders.

When kung fu is taught correctly and credibly, it is way more applicable than boxing and MMA - since these are sports.

I got angry for people not knowing, but how are people to know - when finding credible kung fu instruction is almost impossible outside of China?

As far as Mika, I guess she's fine. I like it when all the fighters are believable, but her design is very creative.

You, mister, just won my special "post of the week" award for being able to apologize on the internet when you think you need to.

Very rare, and appreciated.

If I could press "LIKE" 200 times, I would. Thanks Gav.

It wasn't my goal to come off like a know-it-all douchebag, but that was definitely where I ended up.

It is a very interesting topic tho, I do agree with your statement, Kung Fu is much like many other forms of Martial Art an evolving form of combat such that in China Kung Fu is one of many Variations of the Chinese Martial Arts, others include Wushu ( i did practise this one for 2 years, very interesting, unfortunally requires a lot of dedication and time, such things i lack atm lol) I dunno as far as saying which is more applicable/better because i believe there is no way to determine a standard because every individual has its strenghts and weaknesses, but i can say tho that Monks in China Train Something i dont see very often in MMA fighters, that is the iron body training, and that training alone will make them quite resilient and honestly they can take a hell of a punishment without exausting the fighter.... I dunno tho, its a matter of prespective and fighter in question i guess... Sorry if i revived the topic of MMA vs KF and derailed the thread.

not sure if I have posted this already, but if not

Ryu is the character I have spent the most time with on beta phase 1+2 and during all those stress test.
Capcom has nerfed Ryu in phase 2 quite a lot and even during those stress tests Ryu has received several nerfs.
Imo Capcom has overdone it this time.
I do know many other characters got nerfed as well, but
not even close as many nerfs Ryu has received.
I can't rly explain why Capcom took so many things away
from him. Ryu wasn't even top tier in phase 1.
Cammy, Birdie and Bison were top tier back then.
I am not complaining, but I am trying to understand why Capcom would nerf a character this much.

Here is what I have found.

Cr.lk not cancelable anymore
F+mp damage decrease to 60
F+hp damage decrease to 90
Ex tastu damage decrease to 140
Air Ex tastu damage decrease to 160 from 200

Ex Dp first hit range decrease
st.mk damage decrease slightly
neutral jump HK doesn't combo into st. MP cr. HP anymore, you have to use neutral jump MK now in order to combo
Stun on his SP has been decreased

Izick over SRK has posted this updated list. I can't confirm all of these since I haven't had enough time to do so during the last stress test, but I will do / check this for sure on the next stress test or during beta phase 3 what has changed and whether Ryu has received more nerfs or maybe a few buffs => and will keep you guys up to date.

It's all so very confusing.
Tough to say, but with a game being months away from release and only operating on a rolling on/off beta cycle to begin with, I wouldn't worry too much yet. There could be entire system mechanics not yet implemented as far as we know. I HOPE there are entire system mechanics not yet implemented any way, because as of right now, I find SFV a little plain. I like the idea of a.low barrier to entry, but the ideal scenario with that is that there is a deep and difficult back-end you can spend hundreds of hours with. Currently, TO ME, it feels like they nailed the low barrier of entry, but haven't developed the back-end yet.

20m is enough go get most characters important combos down - I'm sure there is swaggy stuff, but the important BnB's are cake, even the very heavy damage ones, then its just a matter of learning that characters spacing. Now, I know that the spacing/footsie game can be learned and improved on essentially forever, but I just can't picture myself getting as deeply involved in SFV when all I have to work on is how far, or how close, to stand to someone and what 2-3 of my 7-8 normals are actually worth using.

Id like to see jabs/light kicks having a purpose again.. Two and you've pushed the opponent out of range, and at least on the handful of characters I played, they dont link in to much/anything..

Now, this isnt meant to be a real criticism, I have faith the game will flesh out before its released, its just a statement on the current state of the game as I SEE IT.
