Why is STANCE SWITCH A FEATURE!?

Okay so MK9 comes out and there's a little thing called stance switch. Universal mechanic that even makes its way into Injustice Gods Among Us. Now in those two titles the most I've seen anyone get out of this "feature" is the most telegraphed pseudo/ambiguous cross up set up with Solomon Grundy.

But 9 times out of 10 it ends up being a dumb mechanic that causes combos to drop, some spacing issues, & moves to whiff. So why is THIS the core mechanic that gets transferred over to each NRS Title?

How is this mechanic something you're willing to bet the farm on to distinguish you from the rest? Just to show off you modeled the characters as cheeks as well? So Kitana playerz have something to look at that isn't just IAFans?

In MKX it could've been a run button, universal throw break, the short cut for 1+2 in strings like r2 does grabs in strings that end in grabs. But nope it does the most arbitrarily absurd thing in modem fighting games.

Unless there's some deep meta in the 3 afomentioned games that I missed that revolved around switching stance makes a character godlike. It's not like it's the fastest motion for it either and to my knowledge it's not something that can be special cancelled either. You can't do it while blocking cause that's Xray. I mean this finds its way into each game but not those netcode buffs? I'm confused. That and we'll breathing hitboxes...

I honestly think this is good thread. Good points. I've been racking my brain to find ways to use it to help with timing mixups after a hard knock down similar to what people did with grundy but the recovery frames are slightly to high so I abandoned that.. I really do feel it could've been a run button.. I guess it's only use now is trolling... #dancebreak

Well they even made it a trophy/achievement so you know it's a concious decision to keep it in play. I just think the fact that open/closed stance could ever get you into a disadvantageous situation is dumb

they seriously could have done so much with this besides the stupid animation it is used for.

in MKXI they should just have two varations and have this switch between them mid match at the cost of a bar of meter or stamina
or they can use this for characters like metallic tremor to chance stances between gold and lava
or they could use it as a tag button ( bring tag team back)
or they could use it as a taunt/respect button
or they could use it as a cheat button to boost nrs netcode..

Anything more really than what it does now.

Aside from what is mentioned already. Kung Laos 24 spin string in mk9 required the characters to be facing the same way. Otherwise spin would whiff. I don't mind the button for stance switch as much as I mind the fact that stance switch has a shortcut of 2 buttons as well. That's what can cause something to drop. Same goes for pressing 12 or 21 too fast and you'll use an intractable by mistake.

@PND_Mustard Uses this SO MUCH it actually amazes me. Only player I have ever seen use it so often on purpose though and did it in mk9 as well!
Slips used to use it in MK9 to bait reactions with Scorpion.

In general I think one time we got an answer to this question and it was "because Paulo likes it" or something like that. He likes the 3D character models and it might cause problems having 3D characters without a stance flip, I don't know.

One for three off the roof
I've only ever used it to cancel dashes, and bait. Turns out it's horrid for both this time, but at least it has nominal use thanks to stance specific woes.

Check out this old thread and look at how many TYM people voted they'd rather have a stance switch than a run button

http://testyourmight.com/threads/run-macro-vs-stance-switch.51873/

The main argument against was "omg, but I worked so hard learning these super hard run cancel inputs so they have to stay now!"

Fast forward now, far into the games lifespan. Run cancels are easier than breathing for everyone. Not hard. We just have a useless stance switch buttons and need to beat our controllers like they owe us money to play Johnny Cage or D'Vorah.

Oh, but we needed to keep it as stance switch so jobbers could feel super l33t for pressing an extra two buttons to do a menial tasks.

yes can we please get rid of this button.

So summoner quans can't do shit.

It would actually help Quan tho. I mean it wouldn't physically remove the L2 button from your controller, it would just remove the stance switch functionality but still work for the bat, which would stop some misclicks, seems like a good thing to me
