Who is the 'Ryu' of MKX Gameplay Wise?

Just a passing thought...

In Street Fighter it is said that Ryu is the base character, the first one created and tooled by the devs, and the other characters are sort of created off of him. Each character is tooled according to how they would get around Ryu's toolset, and then balanced with the other cast accordingly. Killer instinct did this as well, with Jago as the base character, and the others were built around him to a great degree; he is the 'Ryu' of KI. And I'm sure there are other equivalents in many other FG...I'm just not familiar with them.

Does this philosophy apply to MK at all? MKX??

Both Ryu and Jago are the 'all-rounders' in their respective games, but as far as I can tell, there is no real 'all-round' character in MK from a gameplay perspective. Talking about MKX specifically, there are 'high-tier' characters who can beat much of the cast, but not the obvious character which this game's "fighting game philosophy" is based on.

Where there is smoke, there is cancer.
Yeah this is a real tough question. We could tweet the developers and hope for a response. I'd say there isn't a base character anymore. There probably used to be when Smoke and every other character had Scorpions spear etc in the 2D games, but now that doesn't exist in MK. Like, Street Fighter has it's Shotos and MK doesn't have that. I don't know. I hate this question lol :p

Liu Kang. You can learn all the basics and advanced techniques with Liu Kang alone throughout his 3 variations. Fire Ball Run Cancel, Instant Air Fire Balls, pressure, juggles, zoning, footsies... Everything from the beginner level of game knowledge to pro. He can be pretty much used as a core character to learn the game mechanics.

some of you are going about this the wrong way. Ryu is the PosterBoy for Streetfighter, Scorpion is the PosterBoy for MK.

done and done :)

NRS, Guilty Gear, and KI, the holy trinity
absolutely nobody, everyone has their unique gameplay styles, there is no base fighter like ryu, i have seen this thread so many times and the answer is always simply you cannot compare street fighter to MK. they are too different, they evolved in different ways, maybe the original 4 had shoto-esque characters or base-esque (shaddup i couldnt think of anything better to call it) characters but since MK had a long period of time where there they were 3d fighters that influenced MK in a major way, and since street fighter had one 3d game and then never looked back and went back to 2d street fighter their mechanics stayed pretty similar, emphasis on footsies, base of all fighters, etc. the 2 series are way too different to compare now.

Street Fighter has the concept of Shotos, which comes from traditional fighting styles, basing a bunch of variations around a master 'style'. This doesn't really apply to MKX, where there are a bunch of different archetypes all based around their own principles and tools.

By now all the characters are so different that they really have their own 'voice'.

Every once in a while, there's a character who seems to have a very complete and perfectly-rounded set of tools (like Kung Lao in MK9), but it's very rare that other MK characters are actually based around that character.

Meanwhile Cybernetic Kano has knives(Hadouken), upball(Shoryuken), D4(low forward), no overhead combo starter, wins through footsies, and doesn't do alot of damage outside of the corner.

He's MKX's Shoto.

If I had to choose, I'd say Jax has the most Ryu feel because he is kinda good at everything, but not a master of anything (except when he has you in the corner)
