Saturday August 1st marked the 13th installment of Virginia's Top of the Food Chain tournament series. It has been nearly 3 months since TOTFC 12 where we saw MKX on stage for the first time and the infamous house defense by local Mr Aquaman. Well descended upon our sacred grounds were a few more outsiders looking to take one of our most beloved titles. Outsiders such as Orochi and Krucifix. Orochi of course known as a top Injustice and KI player had a rough transition into MKX when he arrived at totfc 12 and went out pretty early. Well like any top player our northern branch of totfc came and Orochi proceeded to pretty much OCV all of southern virginias top players eliminating Mr Aquaman, Gimpy, I believe Blackula, then YAMS. Finishing 2nd behind Kevo in that tournament. So seeing him walk through the doors put everyone on notice. Missing from the action were two of our areas best in YAMS and ZAPPA, so if would be up to a select few to defend the house.

We begin the action a couple hours late due to the infamous dreadfulness that is..... Virginia traffic......

Right out of the gate matches were called left and right, casters words echoed through the arena, a hue of anticipation thick as fog in the air, bewilderment on the faces of those next in line, and only one would walk out Top of the Food Chain. Early rounds 1 and 2 began with much closer games than we were used to seeing at weeklies and other events around. Those who were at the bottom grow hungrier day by day and eventually somethings got to give. We saw newcomers get first victories, Flex who came offline for the first time just weeks before got a win over traveler Talan, who repped a pretty vicious Ermac. Local SF players woogie boogie plays Lion of leos close to clutch a win with Cassie Bae, and in round 2 there were some nail biters that like I said, we just weren't used to seeing until winners semis at least. Local and online specialist Virtiqal vs Orochi, Orochi looked puzzled early as Takeda swung away with mixups and range that Orochi had not seen before. Virt was ready to make a name for himself and was sick of the losses that have plagued him early on in weeklies and prior regional events. He struck first, chipping away at the defense that was Kenshi and a god amongst FGCers Orochi. But Orochi held his head high, he knew he was the vet, and it shined in the third game as he went from a defensive play style to an offensive approach, and advanced victorious. Agent has a nail biter with local female trident rusher Ice Angel (funny how she mained aquaman and now dvorah). And Krucifix edges out Vegetas arsenal of DLC characters 2-1 with the hero of the game, Johnny. We proceed into winners round 3 and on with convincing wins from all exempt one match that changed the entire landscape of the tournament. With all of SOVA watching, Krucifix from northern Virginia vs Orochi from Richmond. What was a regular match on paper proved to me everything but. (WATCH VIDEO INSERT HERE) Clean wins for Aquaman, Blackula, and Gimpy. A bit of an upset with Blackula over Sid in the Predator mirror.

In losers we saw clean wins all around with small exceptions like Ice Angels 2-1 win and loss early on, Flex sneaking by her to have a great showing vs Orochi. Orochis armor looked battle damaged as he kept having these tough battles early on and eventually it caught up to him. Dark Steel, also known simply as..... The Dark Juan.. legend in his time.... there's an ancient tale, a prophecy if you will, that at every tournament, The Dark Juan always gets one. Always gets one win, one upset, one scalp to collect. This day if was never more true, breaking out his Venomous Dvorah, he barraged Orochi with mixup after mixup and acid sprays as if rained from the heavens themselves. Orochis biggest threat was his use of armor on wakeup and in the neutral and The Dark Juan gave him no such options. Before he could realize what was happening, The Dark Juan got his due....Gimpy and Mr Aquaman duke it out on the winners side with Gimpy putting the defending champion in losers with a convincing 3-0 dismantle of the War God's game. The Dark Juan would fall to Blackula's HishQuBeamCannon and setup the runback with Sidthehaze who has an epic match with Krucifix. The matches were tight, the mood was right, and Blackula reestablishes his form over the youngster saying he isn't ready to give up being at the top. With another 2-0 win Blackula moves on. This sets up losers finals between Blackula and Mr Aquaman. We saw an almost mirror of the 2-0 that was in winners as Mr Aquaman goes up 2 on Blackula, heres where years of tournament play and constant results came in as Blackula slices Mr Aquamans defense apart and keep kotals paddle at bay. Well Mr Aquaman wasn't quite ready to give up on a kotal victory, and after a throw in the corner, the health bars were just right, the stage seemed fitting, and Mr Aquaman commits Hara Kiri...... Brutality. The stream crew looked stunned, Blackula looked as if he had seen a ghost, and the entire building ponders.... what just happened? After a moment of shock you hear nothing but laughter and we get a small break from serious tournament play to enjoy what had just transpired. Aquaman then removes his headphones and screams "ONLY I BEAT ME".

Laughters were all around and then rematch was hit, serious time was back in swing. Aquaman clutches a few armor reads and advances to Grand Finals. Known throughout the community as a man of gimmicks, tricks, and low tier pride, Mr Aquaman had one final trick up his sleeve. After a button check with war god he prompts character select screen and the gods of the day shook hands. Grand Finals begins. Cassie Cage - Hollywood vs Kotal Kahn - BLOOD GOD.

Before realizing who had had picked, it was a pretty standard grand final until Mr Aquaman popped his first totem, then everyone realized what was truly happening. It was a rough start to round 1, until he caught gimpy with a f1b2, 44% later and a few good reads saw him go up 1-0 with a blink of an eye. What had the world come to!? We finally had a match, after the dismantling of war god in winners aquaman needed something to throw off gimpys MU knowledge and blood god was no stranger to aquaman. Back and forth these titans went, every match seems 2-1 in the rounds as blow after blow was struck. Blood gods damage added up, cassies frame data added up. 2-2 was the count, a defending champion, and a new one on the horizon. It was his day, gimpy clutches out a stellar round 5 and secures his new title of Top of the Food Chain. Gimpy of course no stranger as he was top 8 at TCW within the sharks of YOMI and Sonic Fox. With a TOTFC win under his belt, he is going into Summer Jam and TFC with confidence and looks sharp and ready to continue his trend.

"Go back to Scorpion", they said...

but srsly doe, ggz.

It's only my second time at that venue, but I wish every TOTFC could be there. I feel like I'm in the nerd/geek gamer equivalent of an ECW arena.

And congrats to teh Gimpz, of course.
