Question Dealing with Nerves

FinalBoss_FGC

Day -4MONTHS Dual Jin main
Nerves are natural.

Peyton Manning was asked how often he gets nervous before games and he says every time. I think nerves is a sign of your passion for winning. If you don't care about winning, you won't get nervous.

It's not about getting nervous, it's about how you control it. Me? I'm more nervous BEFORE the match and then when the match is happening, I'm not nervous unless it's coming towards the end. I need to deal with the end emotion better.

But you shouldn't feel at a loss because of your nerves. Just remember the basic combos that still get good damage and you don't have to worry about dropping them.

I used to get them quite badly, with a touch of anxiety so things were never that great. I've generally found to be the way for myself to calm down is just to get into the groove of a certain music genre I am feeling at the time. Sometimes it'll be electro, sometimes it'll be hip hop and sometimes even death metal. Once you find a playlist of that genre and just get into the flow, it can really help a lot.

Play for fun, but keep it competitive ;)

Ok, not a ton but a drink or 2 to ease yourself will take you a long way. Too much & it will affect you in a bad way. But seriously, a shot or 2 will help.

Dont take stream matches anymore seriously than off stream ones. A lot of people(myself included) put too much pressure on themselves when they are on stream. The truth is even if it is at EVO and you lose, most people will forget about it immediately. Just play it like any other match.

Everything else has already been said, but I wanted to get that point in there.

Great job at the break! Look like they're all about collusion anyway so it wouldn't have mattered if you made it to gfs.

A friend told me to live in the moment and go one move at a time. That's helped me. In more than just games

The only thing that used to make me nervous ia feeling like I had someone to impress. Once I said fuck what you guys think I stopped having tourney nerves.

Although my nerves get nasty when I'm on the verge if being eliminated :(

When tournament comes around, I don't think I can't beat them, but rather "if I don't beat them."
Been watching you play for years. You have the talent but you're a goddamn relentless troll on the forums. Have you ever stopped to think that maybe you're afraid of someone giving it to you the way you've given it to them? "If I don't beat them, then they're gonna give it to me on an internet forum where my sense of self worth means something!"

Stop already. Grow up and forget about what will happen to your image if you lose. @Tom Brady does enough of that for the entire forum already.

Get high before a match.

I have it on good authority that this works.

I think you need my old school marvel 2 doghouse training. We trained with shit talk 24/7, hell we even played 3/5, who ever lost had to pull an electric pack of gum we had. People started sweating like crazy playing during those.

I really hope this helps you, but I have plenty of experience with this.

Back in my MK9 days I used to play with confidence up until I knew it was important. Which is why I fell at 9th constantly. At MLG, at Evo, NEC... you name it.

For MKX, I taught myself a few steps before a match, and I do not get nervous anymore.

Here it goes...

1. Think back at how much of a perfect game you play in casuals or long sets. How great you play, and your potential as a player.

2. Think about your current surroundings, feel yourself getting nervous, and know that you will lose. And the only reason you will lose is because your nervous, and not because you can't play the game.

3. At this point you might as well just play like you would in a long intense set, since you aren't going to win with nerves. Nothing matters other than playing your best as you usually do.

4. Feel the nerves leave you, and know that you will probably win because you are now at your best. What nerves?

Hope this helps you. Because it helped me. Good luck.

I still can't get over tourney nerves after 4 years

Is it time to pack it up, or does it just mean I need to grind the game more?
-Not sure if nerves come from lack of knowledge or tournament setting. I'm nervous throughout the tournament, but extremely nervous on stream. Very bad shaking on stream.

Music doesn't really work. I think the nerves are more from a psych thing, rather than a comfort level

Focus on what you have to do.

Don't focus on the stakes, the crowd, or even your opponent.

Just zone in and kick some tail.

For me, it's not so much about my opponent honestly. In MK9 and MKX, I felt I could beat anyone. When tournament comes around, I don't think I can't beat them, but rather "if I don't beat them."
It's still all a mind over matter thing my man. in your mind what do you think is going to happen if you don't beat them. Do you think you'll be humiliated? Will you feel depressed because you lost? Just remember it's a competition but you still went there to have fun. Don't think about anyone else but your own enjoyment and remember losing is a part of every competition. Is a loss isn't humiliating, it's a learning experience and helps you grow as a player. If you lost because of nerves take a step back and think why am i nervous? Eliminate the reasons to be nervous with positive reinforcement in your mind and you will find yourself wondering why you were so nervous in the first place.

Also remember if you lose it's not the end of the world. In fighting games you still have a losers bracket. Most sports don't give you that second chance but fighting games give you that opportunity

Seems like the people that deal with them best are playing in tournaments all the time. I know you've taken a break from tourneys for a while, and that might have something to do with it.

I bet if you start playing in tournaments all the time again, you'll get over it in no time.

I can empathize with you, Soup. On all accounts to be quite honest. When we used to play MK9 at VSM back in the days of yore we all performed well due to the environment being a casual one. There was no reason to get nervous when playing because there was no goal for anyone to reach. Now, when the time came for tournaments where it actually "mattered" nerves may or may not come into play. You and I both suffered from nerves for quite sometime. The only difference is our skill level. You're really good at MK, and to be honest you're naturally good at games in general, while as I am just above average at fighters. I've always have been. The reasons nerves surface themselves in the first place has to do with irrational thought that stems into fear. Ones mindset at the time is that they wish to do well in a tournament in order to advance further in the bracket, but simultaneously they don't want to scrub out. One will constantly think of thoughts that gravitate around said matter(s) and then begin to lose full control of common functions that need to be used in that place and time. One is perception while the other is reaction time. Combos drop, one does scrub like tactics, and one will go into auto pilot if all shit has hit the fan. These feelings amplify when one is put on stream because the whole world, or what it feels like, is watching you at that point in time instead of the small congregation of people watching your match from behind. Thousands of viewers are about to see a victor and the defeated. No one wants to be the one that is defeated. One doesn't want to be judged and castigated for performing poorly due to certain circumstances.

You're an amazing player, Soup. You really are. You're also one of the smartest guys I have ever met, and to top it all off you're passionate. Wrap yourself in a pretty ribbon and what do you have? A great human being. You're destined for great things. I knew this ever since the discussion we had in my car on the way to ECT. You can put your mind to anything and excel at it. Nerves are just a mindset that can be vanquished, but you need to work on it. This will take a little time. I can tell you something that worked for me after a while of performing shittier than I normally do. It may work for you, so you should try it. Just tell yourself it's a video game, because to be honest that's all it is. MKX is a video game. Who cares if you perform poorly? You don't get top 8? There's always another major. At the end of the day you should be having fun with the game. This shouldn't be work. You're with a bunch of like minded individuals who share similar interests as you. Just socialize and have fun playing a game that the scene enjoys playing. Are you afraid everyone will think that you're not good? Who cares what they think? Why should you worry about what others think about how you perform. Erase them from your head. They don't exist. Focus on the yourself and have fun with it.

Now, do you pack it up and quit, or continue is another question that you wanted answered. Are you having fun? If yes, then keep playing the game, but don't make it your number one priority. You know what your number one priority is. If you're not having fun anymore, then don't play. As I stated a little earlier, it's a video game. It's meant to be enjoyed. It's not meant to be stressed over. Hope this helps, buddy. Love you. Haha.

Map it out. You sit down with yourself for an hour every day and figure out what's agitating you at the moment. Write it down. One word each. Write a map with this. You'll find recurring issues and frustrations. You can then map those out. It's a long process, but you can break yourself down in a flowchart and fix your peeves.

I could do this all day...
Just recently ESL week one has passed and in case you all were wondering, I was in the first match of top 8, and I looked and felt like a deer in headlights. I couldn’t concentrate; I forgot all of my combos, the matchup I was playing… In other words, I had tournament nerves. I felt humiliated and I was so disappointed with myself. I know I’m a better player than what I showed and if I make top 8 again, I want to redeem myself. This is my first time being competitive in MKX and I want to be the best player I can possible be. So to all of the tournament veterans out there and anyone that can help, what can I do to overcome this?

Hey, although i still suffer a bit from tournament nerves, It has gotten better. The short of it is, experience. The more you play in tournament the more comfortable you will feel which will help with nerves. Aside from that take deep breaths before your match, and i find that chewing on gum throughout the tournament tends to also help me relieve my nerves.
