Match Footage - Thunder God (What did i do wrong?) R.T.Y vs KhaoticRaptor

I played against KhaoticRaptor in a 5v5 tournament and got extremely overwhelmed. From me re-watching it plenty of times it looks like i played way to respectfully and i wanted to know what your guy's opinion was? What could I have done better? What should i have done?I was nervous for sure, never really played anybody in a tournament with the placings like he has. Let me know my match starts at 36:22

"I still got it...but not much of it"
You were too defensive, and you dropped those few combo opportunities that you had which would also lead him to the corner. When he was in the corner you grabbed him and threw him out of the corner. It's ok though, completely normal to be nervous, takes a lot of time to get used to the tournament atmosphere, i know i still haven't ;P.

Don't know if it was the tournament nerves because I don't normally get those anymore. But i think it was the caliber of player i was up against that put some nerves into me. I forgot that grabbing without pressing the button automatically results in a back throw. I was pretty salty.

That is completely normal, you learn from these things, but remember that everyone playing there, even the top placing people are just normal human beings with 5 fingers on each hand just like you :p

When you are confident with your execution, and you know all the matchups, there is nothing to fear.

Mad respect for posting your match and looking for pointers. Nowadays, people are so full of themselves they couldn't possibly admit to a crushing defeat.

I think the point above is the most crucial about knowing your match ups. My first thought watching it (not that I'm any sort of tournament pro or expert...I have seen a lot, though) is that you had to expect takeda's overhead whip spam. Armor through it when close enough for a shock or if out of range, go armor superman. You had a pretty good block game, most people get blown up during his overhead spam into exploding kunai throw. You did well blocking all of that.

Playing TG Raiden is all about setting the tempo. You've got to be the aggressor and get your traps going early. As a TG Raiden, imo, you should really try to avoid his main f2,1,3 string. You have to play his frame advantages and safeties with his electric holds. Going full string is very unsafe and leaves you open to punish. You can also see that he started to read some of the string and shocker dependencies so he was no-block crouching for whiff punish. You caught him once with a b3,2 when he was going for another crouch whiff punish.

TLDR; know your match-ups, utilize armor, don't go full string

p.s. don't underestimate nerves...you dropped a routine b1,4 by attacking too soon after the juggle. That's definitely nerves.

I guess i was nervous. I just didn't feel it at the time but eh. Yeah I can take a loss and learn from it. I'd money match him any day not because i think i'd win but because i think he is someone who would make me better. Looking forward to developing myself and playing him again.

To put it simply. You dropped combos which in turn made it so Raptor never needed to respect you so he was able to fully play his game without fear. Your wakeup was predictable which you saw him neutral ducking then full comboing.

He didn't make top 8 on a fluke. He's not someone to be underestimated even if his character isn't considered top 10.

Correct. I just didn't adapt fast enough. I let him play his game and in terms i got destroyed. He is good, no doubt.

I'm not even that good lol but to answer ur question I think it was just nerves and lack of MU experience. I wasn't that nervous cuz I've had tourney exp at majors and this was just a 5v5 at a local. Takeda's also a character that u just need to know all his holes and how to block his overheads/lows. I just made a couple right reads like ducking your wake-up, but if you mixed up ur wake-ups like doing the rising thunder move I would've gotten blown up. I'm looking forward to playing u again too, I need that Raiden exp. :)

Resolution through knowledge and resolve.
Shake it off and get back to work. He's pretty nice, but you're no slouch either. He got a step on you and kept beating you to the punch.

It happens. Just don't let it get you down or make you start seeing things twisted. You're right there. Just keep putting in work.

"I will cut a hole in you"
Plus his takaeda was poo as fuck, you had so many punishable opportunitys, not trying to be mean, but he was playing kinda ridiculous, yet.. He won

Lack of MU experience seems to have hurt you more than anything.
  • He abused the unsafe versions F1(2)2+4; only the first hit of the whip is safe, then there is a gap before the second overhead hit or any special Takeda can cancel into so if you have meter you can armor through. His only safe option, is to cancel into a teleport cancel after the first whip hit which he will need stamina for.
  • Takeda isn't plus on teleport cancels, but due to it's spacing it's relatively safe. If you think he's going to continue pressure you can armor through.
  • Watching Takeda's stamina bar is always important due to how many gaps he has in his strings; no stamina means he can't apply any safe pressure.
  • The only string Takeda can safely cancel into Kunai from is B11, every other string has a gap before the special cancel.
  • As Raiden:
    • If Takeda ever whiffs B21 you can whiff punish with superman, and if he whiffs just B2, while the 1 of B21 might hit(occasionally can happen) you can punish with ex superman.
    • You can punish raw kunai with ex superman on reaction.
    • Due to Takeda's slow strings you can pretty much sit at a certain distance with meter and wait to react and punish almost anything he can do with ex superman.
Best to go into the lab and become familiar with the animations of what is and isn't safe so you can react more naturally in game. Other than that just make sure you have your BnBs down. You don't want to leave damage on the table but tournament nerves are understandable.

The tournament nerves will go away in time as you become more confident in your ability to win. Don't worry too much about who your playing against but rather the character that you're playing against. The more confident you are in a match up, the less nerve racking it will be when you play a big name because you'll know what their character can or can't do, you'll just need to adjust to their style.

Remind me at next meet up and I can show you how to punish some of Takeda's stuff (even though I really didn't do it well at all that day, blown up)

Red Raptor too strong.
