YOMI and Hype...

also the tourney which was on friday, (cant remember the name) which djt won, some of the most impressive play i saw was from honeybee, tyrant and coach steve. obv yomi has killers but the competition is great

It's no secret that YOMI is my favorite weekly to watch, but I completely understand the dwindling hype factor for neutral parties. It was hard for me to get excited like I normally do on commentary at MWC because it felt like not as much was on the line. It's like "Well, I see this every week, and they're cool with each other, so here are their characters and their gameplan, I guess." I will admit that it's much easier to get wrapped in a situation when it's a regional battle or a personal rivalry and I have a story to tell. With that said, I do appreciate the high level competition that YOMI brings around the whole country. I see them as a touring All-Star team as well. It's really fun to watch them take over locals, but when it becomes YOMI vs. YOMI, it's like..."For you, it was a Top 8 at a Major, but for me, it was Tuesday."

I dont think this is very true. King even talked about how badly King Jr. wants to make top 8, I doubt he would just be like "Oh I made top 8 but it isnt that great since I already play against the best". I dont think these guys take top 8 any less seriously than they would before.

I think it's great. This is really the first time a game has ever come out and so many top players are at nearly every event.

Just thinking of the event I ran where they came, Midwest Championships, would have been a pretty good 50+ player regional without them. But they came out and made it a great event with a major feel to it. Even though YOMI was 7 of the top 8 all of our local players from Tennessee and the rest of the South got to see top level action and the players who really care to improve are much better for the experience. More top players at more events is a GREAT thing. I have a smaller team of players and a similar vision if a different model. Get your name out there by making every event you attend better.

As long as they go all out when they play each other in tournament I don't see this being a problem.

Where did I say THEY don't take it as seriously? I said nothing about the competitors. I'm talking about from a viewer's perspective.

I must've misunderstood then. But I dont really agree with that either, as a viewer I still get hype watching Saltface running through top 8, or pretty much anytime DJT or MIT play. Sure some people might not care much but I can tell how much they really want it and that is good enough for me.

I like seeing them play too, but most of us in here are talking about YOMI vs. YOMI matches outside of Atlanta. On the surface, they're great high level matches and very entertaining, but in the greater spectrum of things, an unaffiliated Midwesterner knocking out an East Coaster has much more impact than two guys who fight each other every day.

I lifted the infraction you're talking about. I won't dispute that it was a rash decision to make, but all the mutterings of foul play from Yomi understandably agitate me, especially since - and apparently @coolwhip agrees - the guy who started the company is a very stand-up man.

Said mutterings have been going on for a while, so no, this thread is not their origin. And to be even more fair, he isn't asking about the legitimacy in what Yomi is doing, only about the concern in competitive rivalries growing while Yomi is around.

But as I'm the villain here like always, let's not take my word for it while you all resume the conversation, shall we? :)

Personally when I watch tournaments, I don't see it as "YOMI/YOMI" -- I just see Malik Terry, Denzell Terry, Forever King, Reo, Slayer, etc. I enjoy seeing those guys play each other regardless of what they put in front of their name. Same goes for 88's, RM, and anything else that's become a widespread thing here.

I still view MIT and DJT as being from Vegas, King as being from the Midwest, Michaelangelo as being from NorCal, Reo as being from NY, etc., and nothing is going to change that.

I figure that if everyone would just ignore the tags and watch the matches, they'd see some great gameplay and a cast of winners that's always shifting even when the same people play. So I'll enjoy seeing the higher level matches and leave the Team Complaining to others.

Props to Reno for taking the first step toward uniting good players in a serious fashion to make them stronger as a team.

Truth is, more people need to step up and get on the same level as these guys. I agree, that while I respect the hell out of the YOMI guys it doesn't help with hype seeing 6 of them in a top 8 at a major. If more people got up to that level of play and started knocking some of them out in pools in such, it would be a better tournament to watch. As far as the "gym leader" comment goes from @Mikemetroid I can understand where that comes from, but the thing that makes it special beating the gym leaders is that theres 1 at each gym....not all of them at the same gym every month.

I'll just say since Yomi is a facility in which top players can train together every day, you know for certain Yomi is going to breed monsters in whatever fighting game they are training for. So when Yomi travels out in a large pack to a tournament, you already know for certain that tournament is going to have a good number of matches with high level play. Any tournament that Yomi goes to (which is alot lol) at least you know for sure you are going to see good quality matches. And like everyone is saying, people are going to want to defeat Yomi, it generates hype when one of us loses.

Also I'll say all the Yomi guys have a bond, most of us are really close friends so it makes a big difference when we go out and play in tournaments as giant unit. It's different then just being on the same team as somebody just because you live near eachother, aka coast hype.

Yup. It's very evident how close you all are, and at the same time very welcoming to new players and willing to help or just chill.

With that said, Yomi are awesome dudes that make tournaments fun af no matter how good or bad you do at a tournament. I'll always be cheering for em when they're not playing ECers haha.

It does kill the hype a bit but I think the opportunity that they're giving to the players is well worth it. Seeing DJT and others at more tournaments and dominating at them makes me happy. The only problem is seeing the same matches over and over, it's less special because in the other games you would sometimes have to wait months to see two specific players matched up against one another. Now it's pretty much every tournament lol but that's a small price to pay imo, I think what yomi is doing is great.
