What's new

General/Other - Necromancer Shinnok (necromancer) is close to being a good character.

I recommend a few minor adjustments. Keep in mind, he is not a vortex character. He is footsies based and (could be) zoning based. With the onslaught of devastating 50/50 characters, I hope we can have 1/2 characters with the zoning potential to deal with high mobility. Here are just a few videos highlighting some of Shinnok's shortcomings. ALL of his zoning options can be ran through for a full combo and corner carry. Shinnok does not have a safe get off me move. Similar to Quan Chi, if you get cornered you are literally dead if you understand wake up mechanics in this game.

^ b3 to flick... an essential footsies tool. Does not connect on more than half the cast.

^ The flick as the potential to be an amazing zoning option. I would like to see it track better and come out on trade. Unfortunately, a large portion of the cast can avoid it by simply walking.

^ mb sparks have the potential to be an incredible space controlling tool. However, things that it should punish are not always punished. sparks is unsafe in every form except on hit. Usually, the third spark whiffs leaving you at >-40 frames. Best case scenario is that the first spark goes as high as the third (you can't jump it), allow spark to be safe or mb'ed to be safe on block, allow it to combo with out requiring meter. For me to use it as a punish tool and to combo, I need to burn at least 2 bars. :(

Hand grab. ^. Again, it has potential to be a use ful zoing option. I would really like to see it work as a slower from the deep. Unfortunately, the tracking is so bad that it cannot be combo'ed into or you an avoid it by simply walking forward. Keep in mind scorpion has a full screen low that has similar start up that leads to 40% combos and vortex. This only gives you 10% lol. lets make it good then.

In addition to the above, shinnok lacks an overhead. I feel he could get by without it with some of the above situations adjusted.

Thoughts?

@ all shinnol necromancer hopefuls

EDIT: i was just watching kenshi gameplay. i hope that flick could track like telefury...

edit 2:

string 312 leads to... well... nothing

@QUAN-FUSION I know man. That is too much meter to use in high level play. You really want to have access to breakers at all times. I would like to limit combos to one bar. Charaters like kung jin are so good bc they get >35% with no bars. Only time I would blow through bar in combo is if I needed a miracle come back or kill combo

There is! The character just have to have the right tools. In the early stages though, MKX seems to be really rushdown/vortex heavy with some exceptions. Its too early to make those assumptions. All I know is that I want shinnok to be a little better.

Necromancer is just awful...bad tracking on bone hand and bone flick...Impostor is the only variation worth playing due to the Mimicry post-guessing game.

i hear ya. I just see the zoning/space control potential this stance has. If I am not going to play necromancer I will just play another character.

My comment was really just me joking. Lol But yeah I agree he could use some buffs.

Once I beat the game, i picked shinnok to try him out. and this variation is actually really good. most people online arent used to shinnok yet as most havent even bothered doing campaign. The hand grab gets em every time but the flick i have trouble with cause of those bull diagonal inputs.

ya he will get away with some things now bc of lack of familiarity. once the game progresses and high level players get their punishes down... shinnok will struggle.

There is no place for a footsie based character in a 50/50 vortex based game.
This whole game is footsie based. Granted, not having a 50/50 could...potentially put him at a disadvantage, but if you're a footsie god he could be decent just like everyone else.

i don't think i can completely agree with this. there are moves that defy footsies. like erron black.. he lands one random 3q screen ex kick move thingy and your in the blender. or raiden lands one a;dklfa;dkjfa;dkjfa;ljdfa and you are in the corner in the blender. cassie has a move that out ranges 99% of the cast. there are characters that can completely avoid footsies, land a random hit, and its set play/5050. so cassies makes you block it once, she is even and then you are in a 33/33/33 bc of the throw system in this game

keep in mind guys that frame data is ONLY accurate if you let go of block at the earliest possible moment. That does not happen in most situations. So moves that are zero are acutally +2-3 or moves that are -4 are actually even or -1

God that flick is absolute dog shit right now.

And sweet Jesus Shinnok is bad compared to other characters.

I think there is, but you must have the proper tools, and Shinnok evidently does not.

While the 50/50 mix ups characters either have teleports or pokes that almost hit you from half a screen away, the vast majority of defensive / zoning characters in this game are designed for a fighting game without a run button. Shinnok is the best example because he has extremely limited options to handle running opponents.

Nobody is asking for another Freddy or Zod in this game, but damn... could we please at least have a handful of fun and viable characters who slightly deviate from the monotonous "run and do 50/50 mix ups" meta game?
