too smart to play MKX
Okay, so disclaimer: we're not talking about who will go where in the tiers, but more or less how they'll be presented.

EXAMPLE: So, let's say Ermac has only one competitively viable variation, or one that just really outshines the other two to the point where everyone will just assume if you're playing Ermac, you use this variation. Whereas say, Raiden, will have three competitively viable variations and they turn him into three totally different characters, with three different placements in the hypothetical tier list.

How does this work? The only other fighter that has a variation system like this is Melty Blood with the Full/Half/Crescent moon system. What that community used to do for their tiers was to make the tier list based on the Moon-Character arrangement that gave that character the highest placement. So in this setup, if all three of Raiden's variations were functional and could work, but variations A and C land him in mid tier but Displacer Raiden is like A+ tier, Displacer Raiden would be the only Raiden listed on the tier list, even though Raiden-C is a totally different character in terms of play style.

Though I believe the MB scene sort of stopped doing this and just started using a general tier list that doesn't specify variation... and I don't really know the game well enough to understand how they go about this.

So will it be that system or will the hypothetical tier list be like:

S - Jax-B, Kenshi-A, Shinnok-C, Scorpion-B
A - Johnny-A, Scorpion-C, Ermac-C, Raiden-B, Sub-Zero-B
B - Jax-A, Ermac-B, Erron Black-A, Shinnok-A, Erron Black-B, Raiden-C
C - Sub-Zero-A, Scorpion-A

Blahblahblah, short form: you want to treat each variation like it's own character when making these lists? Sure sometimes a character might be in the same tier twice or whatever, but still worth pointing out considering a lot of these variations are going to make one character incredibly different. Or would you want the "screw it, just list version that gives the character the highest tier placement" method? Maybe hybridize it somehow.

Of course it's only like any of this matters because 1) it's a tier list and 2) it'll take like... a year to establish anything. And even then I probably still won't give a shit about it. I'm just kind of curious since this variation system has all sorts of balance implications and since this is the MK community, you damn sure know there's going to be a day 2 tier list.

There are like 10 threads on this
It'll be for example: Scorps- hellfire (Scorps-A) vs Johnny-StuntDouble (Johnny-B)

To me this is the easiest and most logical way to do it.

Same with the tier list
S tier- Scorps-A, Johnny-B
A tier- Scorps-C, Johnny-A
Etc..
Good luck to whoever the fuck decides to create this soon to be monster of a list tho

Most humble shit talker ever!!!
Thats what i assume we where doing

making that the primary tier list
and then doing one with characters as full for reference sake

Fuck tier lists. Learn your character and match ups instead of worrying about where your character stands theoretically. Finding a character that fits your natural playstyle and fighting game mentallity is more important. Just look what Arturo did with Dhalism this weekend.

Besides that, who they hell thinks that anyone will be able to make a MU chart for MKX that will be anything close to accurate. Shit is stupid, just play the game and level up your character.

A lot of people have thought about this! So ya! I'm not going to really worry about tier lists this time. Too many characters.

I think we should worry about doing match-up numbers and taking match-up numbers to create tier list.

My idea is to take each individual variation and compare it to other Character's variations..take the difference from neutral (If all MU's vs a certain character is 5-5 then the result difference would be zero, 6-4 would be +1 because it is in your favor by 1 match) add them within the variation..do this for the other 2 and find the average
For instance:

Kung Jin's Ancestral variation - Average 0.3
Kung Lao - BS 6-4, HT 5-5, T 5-5 = +1
Kitana - A 4-6, M 4-6, RS 6-4 = -1
Cassie- B 6-4, H 5-5, SO 5-5 = +1

KJ's Bojutsu Variation - Average 2
Kung Lao - BS 5-5, HT 6-4, T 5-5 = +1
Kitana - A 7-3, M 5-5, RS 6-4 = +3
Cassie - B 4-6, H 6-4, SO 6-4 = +2

KJ's Shaolin Variation - Average 0
Kung Lao - BS 4-6, HT 5-5, T 4-6 = -2
Kitana - A 5-5, M 6-4, RS 6-4 = 2
Cassie - B 6-4, H 5-5, SO 4-6 = 0

Kung Jin's overall score - 0.76

Then you take the overall score and put it in order:

Kung Lao - 0.8
KJ - 0.76
Cassie - 0.75
Kitana - 0.68

And that's how you do it, folks. :)

Obviously this is just an assortment of random numbers to show you what I mean

Ok. I got it. 3 variations. 24 characters. Each variation is tested individually against every other variation in the game and is assigned a match up number for each one that will be converted to a decimal that will be combined with the match up decimal of all three variations, divided by three to find an average, multiplied by 100 and assigned a number ranking from 1-100 that will place it on a list with the other 24 characters from highest to lowest.

If people get obsessed about tier lists again with this game it will do nothing but harm it. More characters that wont get touched because everyone assume's they're low tier early on when in reality no one has put in the work with the character yet to find their dirt. It will lead to unnecessary buffing/nerfing and be a mess. Every single tier list will look different due to variations and no one being able to grind out every match up to its full extent. There's no point. Level up your own character and have us all learn the game for real this time.

Fuck all the math
Just body bitches end of story :coffee:
Everyone already has their own "tier list" in their head anyway
You know what your character can and can't do..You SHOULD know what your opponents character can and can't do
You go into a match with this automatically whether there is a "community list" or not so

Fuck a tier list

Maybe it's time to let go of stupid fucking tier lists. We all knew Batgirl and MMH were good. Who cares if one is above the other?

Oh who am I kidding...This is TYM, there will be a race to make the first 90 person tier list that'll be completely outdated a month later.

I think it will depend on what the consensus is regarding competitive play. If a winner is allowed to change variations during character select then I think the tier list would be completely character based. If the winner is also variation locked then a tier list would need to treat each variation as its own character. Tier lists are based on match ups. If a character is allowed to use all of their variations between matches to deal with tougher match ups then there would be no need for a variation specific tier list.
